In the wake of what has happened in Japan,Libya is not quite as front page as it previously was but the battle for power is still ongoing.I was reading today that Gadaffi has again launched an air attack on the rebels and there is the very real possibility now of him remaining in power. If he does prevail I expect there'll be a canny few arrests and "disappearances".I also wonder how the relationship with the West will have changed if at all-after all if the concern is over the oil supply will the west once again stand idly by saying nothing about human rights abuses and more to the point will we be arming him again

Bahrain protesters.....Saudi Arabia sending in reinforcements to repress them. Western intervention would be thought of as an act of war. What next?

Whats next is Iran getting involved. They have strongly protested at the deployment of Saudi troops and warned against the use of force against Shi'a protesters. The ruling Sunni royal family have asked for help from their Sunni neighbours. The opposition are regarding it as an act of war. Very volatile right now

Didn't know that, Shadow, it always looks ominous when they all start taking sides. Even if some things resolve themselves (if thats the right word) they all remember who sided with whom. Reminds you of kids in a playground....though I expect they would have more sense and forgive and forget!

I think its very much to do with the fact that these are Sovereign countries.Saudi and Bahrain are ruled by Royal Families-hence Handy Andys access -and they certainly arent democracies. As I understand it-Saudia is majority Sunni and ruled by a Sunni royal familly-Bahrain is also ruled by a Sunni royal familly-however they are in the minority there-the protestors are Shi'a. Iran is prodominently Shi'a too. Religion has caused how many deaths over the centuries But I dont even think its that simple now-powers the name of the game-the unelected rulers fighting to stay in power and the west tip toeing round our maties oil rich regions waiting to see who wins

Personally i feel this has nothing to do with the selling of arms to Libya or anyone else for that matter i cant remember an outcry when the Argies were sinking our ships with French Exocet missiles . The only reason this subject is being brought up is because Gaddafi is using them against his own people....I wonder if there is such an outcry in other countries who have supplied Libya over the years and again i wonder if there was an outcry in the USA when the British were using American rubber bullets against the Irish during the troubles there. Hear, Hear, Nick Good post!!

The Bahraini Government will have asked for "assistance" from their Saudi neighbours, Milky, as part of the Gulf Co-operation Council treaty. Iran isn't part of the GCC Mind you, having spent 14 1/2 years in Saudi and seen the Saudi Armed Forces in "action" during Gulf War 2, God help the Bahraini's There was a report today of 1 Saudi being shot by a protester........probably had his weapon (ahem) pointed the wrong way and shot himself!!!

CWL Wellyes obviously it's people who kill other people, but it's dammed religion that causes people to engage in conflict!! My sky fairy is bigger than your sky fairy What the hell is it about religion/beliefs that seems to bring out the worst in people??? It's been going on since the time of the Crusades and before!!
