There are quite a few British people who have ancestors from other countries and, of course, the Scottish, Welsh, English and Irish are all over the British Isles. I, myself have a distrust of extreme nationalism in any country but am proud to be British and think our values are generally among the best in the world. The often understated nature of our national pride I think is a good thing and a lot of nations, I'm sure must envy us and wish they had the same sort of thing. Part of the reason for this is the very tolerant type of society we have here and, of course the freedom of speech (as on here...imagine having this forum in some places!). I do agree, though that for the life of me I can't understand how England seems to have missed out on all these beneficial things...free prescriptions, care homes, university fees etc that the other home nations have?

Look skint i do realize that there are lots of problems with the Uk but in my life time I've never had to see genocide of my family or rape. Used as a weapon so consider yourself lucky to live in a country where you are relatively free all I'm saying is is not a crime for one country to take a stand when something is very obviously wrong and if you don't agree you are100/wrong

The Scots and the Welsh get money from central government as well as what they raise themselves. The reason they have free prescriptions etc is because they choose to spend the money on those things, as opposed to other things. Maybe their bureaucracy is smaller than that in England, maybe they don't have as many Quangos. Scotland and Wales have their own flags, as does England, it's obvious they are going to display that as oppose to the Union flag, the same with the National Anthem.

So Ann-sorry to go on- but the union jack and national anthem are becoming redundant then? Its funny-Ive never considered myself British-and not even fully English-if some-one was to ask me I'd say "half German" and its interesting to see how the lines are being redrawn

How did these countries get into these situations....a very complicated question which I am not qualified to answer. However, with the "coming of age" of some of these nations it seems as though they might be starting to do something for themselves. I know it might be impossible for some places to even start to do this....think of North Korea and that ba....d Mugabe! Also, of course we might have interfered in countries in our colonial past and laid the foundations to their problems. The Red Indians maybe would still be "in charge" of America and the Aborigines would be roaming freely over Oz. Granted that we also did good things in these places, too. The 2nd World War was a different matter and I definitely feel we did the right thing there...no doubt about it. I just hope that with this feeling of "ordinary people" having had enough of the "powers that be" that it will spread slowly, gradually all over the world. Maybe, from time to time we might have to help in some way....arms, military force being the obvious "assistance" but I would rather they did it, somehow by themselves!

The English can have the Union flag and "God Save the Queen, the Welsh have "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau" and the Dragon flag, and the Scots have "Flower of Scotland" and that blue and white flag. TBH I couldn't care less If someone asks me what nationality I am I say Welsh. And I'm certainly not European

Will some one please note the flag of saint george is the English flag. the Union flag is in the name. ;D The St George flag is the emblem of England, I have one that goes in my window when it needs to. I don't have a Union Jack as it's made up of 3 flags Northern Ireland and Scotland and they have their own flag I don't want one of those.
