Do we need a revision of the card system and the applying of punishment in retrospect. Strange that Carragher and Rafael can stay on the pitch yesterday following atrocious tackles from the two of them. Or that De jong went unpunished having broken Ben Arfa's leg. We're seeing a general increase in number of serious or career threatening injury following dirty tackles which often go , let's be honest, midly punished.
At the same time players receive yellow cards and even red cards for celebrating goals. It's mind boggling.

I'm not convinced revising the use of yellow and red cards will make that much difference as it still comes down to the referee when to apply the ruling. However I am in favour of retrospective action for when they get it wrong. Other sports use it within their disciplinary structures so why not football. All this rubbish about it undermining referees judgement and the like is b*****ks. The one thing it would do is make players think twice before doing what they know is wrong but hope to get away with in the heat of the game. Referees are only human so will make mistakes it's the refusal to acknowledge them as such which annoys me. CWL

Some UEFA games are now played with as many as 6 referees (1 main + 5 assistants) around the pitch plus observers in the stands. Surely they can get some of the more dubious decisions right between them. The retrospective judging, in my opinion takes away some of the charm from football but at the same time should increase fairness and caution. I reckon we have all blamed the ref. at some time, often unfairly. God who'd be one?

I know what you mean.............re: being a Ref. There was a piece on TV here last night about how Phil Dowd managed the game between Liverpool and United. Quite clearly having watched the game myself he could have sent off at least three players, however would it have made it any better to watch? The fact he kept his cool when quite a few around him were losing theirs was quite refreshing in some ways. They then showed a couple of incidents in a game reffed by Mark Clattenberg....................one penalty decision he bottled completely and knew it as well, only to give another later which had everyone in the ground scratching their heads as to why? What is it with these guys? Don't they know they will get more respect from saying I got it wrong than just ignoring it and hoping it will be forgotten. CWL

CWL I referred to the Phil Dowd incidents on another thread . yesterday. IMO he refereed the game as if it were a game of ice hockey. Allowed the players to fight it out amongst themselves before intervening on both occasions and dishing out the punishment he thought necessary at the time. I think it was handled quite well but many will argue that he would have been justified in showing both Garragher and Raoul red cards. Clattenburg is more than likely a nervous wreck at the moment , unable to make a rational decision since he will be considered hoplessly wrong whichever stance he takes. He should be taken out of the limelight for a while because we are entering a period of the season where all points are vital for all teams no matter which position they hold in the league.

Why can't they use the system that Rugby refs use? If they have a "dodgy" decison, they go on those mike thingios they wear and ask someone to review the video and advise them. If we can see instant replays, why can't anyone else??? Or maybe a pitch side replay thingio, so the ref can refer to it. I know things happen quick on the pitch (well, sometimes ) but surely while the player is writhing on the floor, the ref could take a quick shufti at the video to see what happened!!!

Bring back Leeds team of the 70's. you would only have about 18 players left on the pitch if you where Lucky now that would be good to watch what the ref would do now a days. ;D

What a joke, the stewards were only walking after him and the player gets sent off for doing their job and wanting to get on with the game.

So Purplenose gets a 5 match ban plus £30.000 fine. Cheap at half the price if you ask me. When you consider the number of times, up through the years he has gotten away scot free for similar offences. Take it on the chin SAF. It's a bit like me and speeding fines. I pay them willingly the few times I'm caught.

He will probably appeal and get a lesser punishment.

Two match ban for Rooney after his tirade during the victory over West Ham at the weekend. The correct action by the FA or has Rooney received this because of who he is and plays for? Not sure if an appeal will be forthcoming however he could miss the game at SJP if it doesn't come into effect immediately. CWL
