TBH Magpie, I think it's 6 of one, half a dozen of the other!!! Ashley and Carroll were "seduced" by 35 mill We can only go by what we read in the papers etc, but Ashley's first priority is making money, and he will do it anyway he can!! He is a businessman first, second and third, he's not that interested in Newcastle as a football team, but just as a way of increasing his profits. This has been obvious since the day he took over.

He's also a gambler, and as someone said in something I read, he's gambling on the fact we won't go down. And most gamblers' attitude is "win some, lose some". He couldn't care less about the fans, they are just incidental to his main objective - making money!! He's a ruthless businessman, who happens to own our football club!! We want trophies, he wants money!!!

As for Carroll, I think he was "seduced" by the money!!! The % he'll get from the transfer and also the extra wages he'll get. Pressure might have been put on him, by his agent and Ashley. Yes, he could have said no, and should have done, but unfortunately these days, money counts for more than loyalty!!! I really think that caps should be put on transfers and wages!!! Otherwise we might just as well, instead of a Premier League, have a League of the richest clubs and have done with it!!!!

Carroll doesn't get a percentage of the transfer fee. Not if he asked to be put on the transfer list. Mind you in my mind i would not be surprised if there was a"backhander" from MA for "going along" with it. But hey, that would be unethical

You still avoid the obvious question - Did Carroll absolutely have to leave us? No. He had a new 5 year contract and the players, manager and fan on his side. Ashley could and did nothing to force him out.

Did Ashley do enough to stop Carroll leaving once he put in the request? No. But we all know how our owner is. No surprises there for me. After all it was good money.

Like I said before. I'm not surprised with Ashley. But I'm shocked with Carroll.

In answer to that question, One big NO. he provided his helicopter to get AC out of Toon as quickley as possible

So what is going on? I doubt we will ever know the truth. Carroll claims that he was pushed and the club totally deny that they pushed him (as they would).

George Caulkin of The Times (the greatest footy journo that there is) summed it up nicely when he tweeted "Carroll was not agitating to leave. He wasn't unsettled. And, yes, the transfer request was a mechanism used by NUFC. But..... he signed it."

Both parties are culpable. It can't be a surprise to anyone that this sale happened so late that we did not have time to sign a replacement. The token gesture that was an 'attempt' to sign Charles N'Zogbia was an insult. Does anyone really believe that Ashley's bitter rival Dave Whelan was going to sell his prize asset to him minutes before the window closed? Of course not.

Pardew had his say on the matter today, ending his statement with "....the decision was right for the club." Quite a turn around in 6 weeks.

It is OK though because Pardew can assure us that all of the mental £35m fee will go towards players. Then again he also assured us that none of our key players would be sold in the window so personally I don't believe a word. Amazingly Ashley still has support amongst the fans and those supporters will be mentally considering how they (or Pardew) will spend the $$$$$$$. If you are one of those people could you do me a favour and remind me where the tens of millions from Milner, Given, Beye, N'Zogbia and then Martins, Bassong, Duff etc went. Thanks.

Newcastle United usually wait about 6 months between the hoofs that they give us supporters in the private's. This time it is only a matter of weeks since the last one.

The sale did not really surprise me. Why should it? We have been a selling club all of my life - Waddle, Beardsley, Gazza, Cole, Woodgate, Jenas etc It really disappointed me though. The loss to Newcastle is far bigger than the gain for Liverpool and I really fear for our immediate future with a forward line including Shola, Best, Lovenkrands or Ranger. That is not Premier League standard.

Money - some say it is ruining the game. £35million for Carroll is a preposterous fee, but so what? The supporters will not benefit at all - can we celebrate another £35 million in Mike Ashley's bank? Of course not. We did enjoy celebrating a local hero's towering headed goals.

That is not to exonerate Carroll. He signed a new 5 year deal only a matter of weeks ago, but then why would anyone be surprised at his head being turned? ANYONE would be tempted by (and take) what is reported to be a four fold salary increase. He is secured for life and could accumulate generational wealth. He wouldn't have gone short had he stayed on Tyneside though and he would have become a Legend. It must have irked him that other players in the first team were on 3 times the amount he was even with his new contract - if the club (Ashley) wanted to keep him sweet they would have paid him his market worth.

At about the same time this was all taking place Blackpool rejected a 'significant' Liverpool bid for Charlie Adam. Allegedly Adam was furious, a heated discussion took place and the Chairman called TalkSport to state categorically that Adam would be a Blackpool player come February 1st. He was good to his word - yes, there were rumours of Spurs almost pulling off a last minute deal, but they didn't. It is sad that Blackpool appear to be a club with greater ambition than Newcastle United when you consider their relative resources and the fact that adam's contract is 4 years shorter than Carroll's was.

Under the ownership of Ashley we have suffered a humiliating relegation and now most fans pray for mid-table mediocrity. This for a club that had the 6th highest revenue in the country the last full season we were in the Premier League. The club that Deloitte have in the top 20 in Europe in their money league. The club that had the 18th highest average attendance in EUROPE when we were in this country's second tier!

Ashley is well known to be a gambler and once again he has gambled our Premier League status. Last time he made that same gamble, he lost.

Marky have you read where carroll is saying it was to bigger offer to refuse.he has said he did not what to go. but he signed on the doted line he did not have to. I now the fat one can not be trusted and i know he must have been rubbing his hands when he did sign. but we all have our views.

Carroll may have asked for more, but how much was Ashley paying him? True he did sign a five year contract but perhaps his earnings were derisory compared to others in the team? I think your judgement is clouded on this, your leaving out the 35 mil factor, you blame Carroll entirely for this when the joke "board" were intent on selling him.
Remember when they tried to rubbish Keegan? Does that not ring any bells? Where they found out? You state he did not have to sign, that is very true, but where would that have left him?

The January transfer window has finally closed in what was an astonishing day in football. Fans across the country will be looking forward to debuts from their new players. However there are one set of fans this morning who will not be happy with yesterdays events.

Newcastle United yesterday sold Andy Carroll in a £35 million deal to Liverpool. The fallout has already begun as to who is to blame for the transfer, Carroll has claimed he was forced out; I didn’t want to leave. Make sure the fans know I didn’t want to leave.” While Alan Pardew has commented back; We had a conversation about him wanting a new contract, and [Carroll said] if he did not get that contract he wanted to go.”

One person who hasn’t commented on the transfer so far is Newcastle owner Mike Ashley. What a surprise this is, the man has just taken £35 million from a player who cost nothing and has not reinvested in the squad. Some will argue this is because he didn’t have time to do so but if that is the case why didn’t he wait till the summer? Sure Carroll would have gone for cheaper but who’s to say the whole £35 million will be reinvested anyway? Only time will tell.

For every act Ashley does to get Newcastle fans behind him, he then responds with something equally stupid in return. Take for example the appointment of Kevin Keegan in January 2008, this was seen as coup for Ashley with the fans sure to back the appointment.

Less than 8 months later and Keegan is forced out due to lack of backing in the transfer market and not having the full control over transfers. Ashley, after failing to sell the club, tries to regain the fans trust when Alan Shearer is brought back to St James Park to try and stave off relegation in April 2009.

Even the Geordie great was not enough to save them and more anger was directed towards Ashley. Are there any more things Ashley can do to alienate fans? Off course there is. Newcastle winning the Championship and starting off well in the Premier League under manager Chris Hughton was not enough for Ashley.

On 6th December Chris Hughton was sacked after being given the permanent position just over a year previous to this. Ashley has reached new levels of stupidity after this stunt.

Even more baffling was the decision to appoint Alan Pardew on a five and a half year contract. Given the recent track record of Ashley sacking managers is it really that wise to be offering such a long term deal? If Newcastle get relegated what of Pardew’s position then? A hefty compensation payout will certainly be required.

The previous paragraph may come across as a bit of a rant, but it is a rant supported by facts. I am merely trying to show how unlucky Newcastle fans are with an owner out of touch with what the fans want, and as a Liverpool fan, I know all too well what that feels like.

This latest saga in Mike Ashley’s reign as Newcastle owner will have only further reinforced the judgements of football minded people that he is an idiot. No matter how much a club comes in for your player you never have to sell. Ashley will claim Carroll wanted to go because the contract they offered was not enough for him to stay, but regardless of this a transfer request never has to be accepted. Liverpool rejected Fernando Torres’s request without any hesitation so why couldn’t Newcastle have done the same?

Everyone could have seen that had Carroll been on his way to Liverpool there would not be enough time to get a replacement. This is especially true as Liverpool were going to wait until as long as possible so they could be sure they could get their man, so that Torres would be given permission to go to Chelsea.

When it was clear that Liverpool might have to sell Torres, they were very quick and decisive in finding a replacement, Newcastle on the other hand, aware that other clubs were after their star man, waited till half an hour before the deadline to try and find a replacement, an impossible task.

As a club owner, as soon as there is interest in one of your players, particularly a star player, you must be prepared. This means lining up replacements should the worse happen. This isn’t genius, this is standard procedure. Mike Ashley is man that should not be running a football club.

So what next for Newcastle? They currently sit 9th, 8 points clear of the relegation zone. A star player down and no new replacement found. Carroll has scored 11 Premier League goals so far this season, something Newcastle will greatly miss. However it is not just his goals that Newcastle will miss, it is mere presence on the field, his aerial threat for other team mates to latch on 2, particularly Kevin Nolan who has an equal record for Premier league goals scored this season.

Pardew will have been looking forward to building a team around Carroll and will surely be disappointed with the outcome. I bet he even has doubts as to whether he will see the full £35 million being reinvested in the squad.

Newcastle’s sole objective this season should be just to stay up, regardless of Ashley and the board’s ridiculous expectations. This will be made all the more harder now they have lost a talisman and pressure will be on Pardew to get results. Newcastle fans will not be accepting relegation again, and neither should they.

This season so far has been acceptable, they may even be guilty overachieving at times, despite Mike Ashley’s attempts to destabilise the club. We will probably never know what exactly happened with the Carroll transfer saga, whether Carroll really wanted to leave or not.

One thing we do know is nobody forced Mike Ashley to sell, perhaps someone should be forcing him to sell the club, it would be better for football and better for Newcastle.

Let it be known i do not trust any of them. If i could i would get rid of this fat owner and all is pals which i believe they are in it together. but i am gutted that Andy sighed on the doted line. he could have waited till the summer and then if he did not get a new contract then put in for a transfer then i would understand and back him all the way.
