Born in Durham..... Then Chester-le-Street.... Then The Toon.....(Wellington Street off Barrack Road)... Then Wallsend (Station Road).... Then back to Chester-le-Street..... Was never a Mod but had nice line in Levi stay press trousers, Ben Sherman shirts, Blazer, Crombie, Harrington jacket and DM's. Never went the whole hog with the hairstyle though.... Turned into a casual towards late seventies without ever realising what one was. Never fancied being a punk. Always smile when I hear Dire Straits Sultans of Swing and think back......this line in particular: And a crowd of young boys they're fooling around in the corner Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles They don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band It ain't what they call rock and roll And the Sultans played Creole As for Quadrophenia some how just can't imagine Polly as Sting! Although did see The Who play it at The Odeon on Northumberland Street in 1973. WL Jeeze.....WL........Was there at the Odeon too......they were supposed to play Quadro live for the first time........it didnt work out......Moon was throwing drumsticks across the stage at the sound guy...so they played oldies the whole night.......awesome.

Lived in a tiny place called Burseryd (around 800 inhabitants in the village itself) my entire life so far. Right now however I seem to be going between that place and southern Poland. What else is there to tell? Not much really. Things were so much more different in your younger days than they were/are in mine. Natt.......this is really interesting to me.....you are the quiet, well respected, accepted, long time member of both this forum and previous. You have to tell us how with your background above you can be such a staunch Toon supporter......how did that happen?

Natt.......this is really interesting to me.....you are the quiet, well respected, accepted, long time member of both this forum and previous. You have to tell us how with your background above you can be such a staunch Toon supporter......how did that happen? Well respected and accepted? Now I'm feeling moved... or I am all this just because I keep quiet. To explain my affection for this club I guess I'll have to share some family history. It more or less began with my grandmother who, just like wor Canny here, was born in Ashington. This was back in 1923, her mother was Irish and her father Scottish. We've been told that he was of the Russell clan. She also had two older sisters and one brother. Everyone in her family had red hair except her. To her dismay her hair was black instead. Though she was born in Ashington, she was raised in Newcastle where she studied in a cloister. Eventually, when she was grown up, she moved to London. She was working as a nurse there when the Germans were bombing the city during the war. Once the war was over she got wooed by a Swedish sailor who convinced her to come to Sweden with him. It was notified in the newspapers when the boat from England finally arrived. They mentioned a little English girl who was happy to be ashore. That little English girl was my grandmother and she was in her early 20's then I think. Then came the big shock for her as she saw her new home. Having been used to cities like Newcastle and London she never expected that a small place like Burseryd could exists. Back then it can't have been more than a couple of hundred people, maybe even less, living there. No one knew any English apart from the priest and the local school teacher. She was as alien as a real alien in this place. In the beginning she just wanted to go back home again. But she got used to the place and lived here for another 50 years before her passing. During my childhood I wasn't really interested in football at all. I considered it to be pretty boring... until I turned twelve or so. For some reason there was only one team that I was interested in. Could be because it more or less was the first English team I heard of. My grandmother of course was a Newcastle fan already. Though she didn't really talk much about the club. Maybe I got it from her because supporting this club felt right. There wasn't even any other club I would have considered to follow. Could be that I started supporting Newcastle the day I was born.

Jeeze.....WL........Was there at the Odeon too......they were supposed to play Quadro live for the first time........it didnt work out......Moon was throwing drumsticks across the stage at the sound guy...so they played oldies the whole night.......awesome. Remember they played three nights and I was there for the second evening, possibly a Wednesday. Then again that may have been another concert entirely.....Floyd, Humble Pie, Faces..... Memory being what it is and having seen them a few times since, I'm not sure what they played that night to be honest, but regardless still one of the best bands I have seen live though..... That saying about 'I may be old, but got to see all the best bands first' has a ring of truth to it. As for The Junco's never saw the original line up, but caught them later on in the seventies when the played on the quayside. Think they had a residency at The Cooperage which was one of the places at the time for live music from local bands. Next up will be which pubs did you drink in on match day..... before you left the country that is.... WL

Agreed..... I could say It's all Pardews fault when it comes to Stevie Marriott, however that's not the case this time. Older brother loved Small Faces and had loads of their 45's....it was easy from there. Great showman and pleased I saw him perform.... Only started going into Strawberry as I got older..... not really place for seventeen or eighteen year old to hang about. Magpie opposite S&N brewery was always a haunt as you would expect. In city mixture of Pineapple, Black Bull, Fish Bar, City Vaults and The Bridge for supporters club gatherings. Newcastle Labour Club and up stairs in the Percy Arms (when it was supposed to be closed) before being picked up for away matches..... again blame older brother. Loads of others as well, but might need to think a bit to remember them all.... WL

Match days was usualy The Adelphi for me. Can't remember the name of the street but the pub was situated vis a vis the stage door to Theatre Royal. An amazingly buxom barmaid. Ahhh The Odeon - remember seeing The Stones there for the first time, warm up band for Chuck Berry. Still go to see them whenever possible. Can't remember date - mid sixties probs. Never saw Pink Floyd live until they started stadium gigs AWESOME!!!! Finally would you believe I've never been in the Strawberry in my life. Remind me next time we meet

Awesome story Natt.......I knew you had some Ashington in you.....I could just tell......its where you get your passion from.........My mother was born in 1923 in Ashington .......Maiden name Johnson....who knows ..........we could even be distant relatives..........Have you been over here? Sadly I've only been in England once in my life and that was 26 years ago when I was three years old. Only visited London too. As soon as I can however, I will definitely go there. Can't say if I should be terrified or not over the prospect of being relatives or not. The father, whom I think was called Thomas Russell, I think just arrived to Ashington. Coming there in hopes of working in the coal mines. The mother's first name I can't remember. But her last name was McSherry. She also had relatives in England with the name Foley... though where they lived I don't know. Her two sisters' names were Rose who later moved here too and, I think, Mary-Jane. I also think her brother's name was Albert and the only thing I know about him is that he moved to Australia. But I guess that you might be right about that it is the Ashington in me that makes me sharing the joy and frustration with you all over this very special club.
