Sammy is a totally different player to Shola................. he can run for a start............ That said he has grown about another six inches taller since I saw him last season. Once this kid realises just how good he is we could have a player on our hands. That's of course providing TFB doesn't sell him at the first opportunity. The first half was so poor mainly because neither Best or Ba could hold the ball up front. It just kept coming straight back putting pressure on our back four. Mind you as a unit they were awful. The midfield spent more time chasing the ball down than actually building any attacks. Lovenkrands didn't even appear to be on the pitch for long periods of the game. It was also a toss up for me which of Ba and Best looked the more useless................. however you can see why we got Ba on a free! If he is supposed to be the answer to our goal scoring dilemma then we are in deep trouble. Things improved considerably once Sylvain Marveaux moved into the midfield after half time. The Toon then started to get a grip on the game, but still struggling to make a clear cut chance in front of goal. Although Best had a one ruled out for offside. Fortunately up stepped Ryan again to save our blushes in normal time with another deadball special. He later had a good shout for a pen, but the ref wasn't having any of it. With Marvelous pulling the strings in midfield, plus more movement and pace with Vuckic and Sammy on the field we began to dominate. That said until Obi-twos twenty yarder I thought it was going to pens............. and that would have been nail biting to say the least. CWL

I wonder if APee will play a single target man at home this weekend rather than continue to go with the two up front? After last night I would rather we played with two wide men and Shola on his own up front than play either of Ba or Best alongside him. It's just a waste of a position IMO putting one of them in the side. One thing for sure if NUFC do manage to bring a striker in before the window closes there's not much competition for a starting spot up front. CWL

And bloody annoying Fairsy.................. Seven months and not even close to getting a decent player in! Planning they're having a laugh! Plus I don't care how good a job Ryan Taylor is making of his chance in the side, he is not and never will be, a left back! CWL

Canny, one thing that has surprised me is that Cabaye the Lad is picking up a lot of yellow cards........................ I don't believe he is a dirty player, so is it down to refs or is this just a part of his natural game? TBH I'm liking what I have seen so far........ CWL

Can't say we were that convincing yesterday. Throughly outplayed in the first half. Ba looks like a new (Shola) Ameobi and Løvenkrands, Gosling and Best couldn't hit the goal. A new striker is a must but will we see one? Simpson and Taylor didn't look very convincing either. Krul had a couple of very bad kicks but otherwise we have him to thank for the victory. Would be interesting to see if Sammyobi or Vuckic will get a few minutes against Fulham. well summed up,Tim was immense(couple of bad clearances) but Simpson!!!how bad was he,we're shouting for aleft back, please move Ryan over there.

Marky, I agree at times it's as if Homer Simpson is playing right back not Danny, but do you honestly think Ryan Taylor is any better? I can just about get away with Ryan playing wide right or right side midfield at a push. Yet putting him in at right back will not make The Toons defence any better IMO. Doubt very much we will be buying anyone to play there so it's a case of sticking with Danny and seeing how the season goes. I'm hoping Darnel Situ may push for a spot as he can play full back and young Tav comes good after his spell with Carlisle. Although it's a big ask of both lads. CWL

Looks as though Hatem could be back for the Carling Cup game at Forest........The following comes from the official NUFC site. United boss Alan Pardew has pencilled in a possible return to action for Hatem Ben Arfa at Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup. The forward has been out of action since suffering an ankle injury on the Club's pre-season tour of America in July, which forced him to fly home early. Having undergone his rehabilitation in his French homeland, Ben Arfa returned to the North-East at the start of this week and was straight back in to training at the Magpies' Benton-based Training Centre. His recovery and fitness levels have been a pleasant surprise to Pardew and his medical staff, and the manager is contemplating handing the France international a comeback when United travel to the City Ground in the third round of the Carling Cup on Tuesday, 21st September. "Hatem's progress has been better than we thought, and he is certainly ahead of schedule," explained Pardew on Thursday. "When he came back this week we were not expecting him to be in perhaps as good a condition as he is in. "I have earmarked maybe the Nottingham Forest game as maybe an opportunity for him to take part in that game, but we will have to see how he goes. But so far his injury looks really good and his fitness does too." Let's hope he gets some game time............... CWL

APee has intimated there will be changes for the trip to Forest from the side which played at Villa. The main talking point is that Hatem Ben Arfa will definitely get a run out, with Danny Guthrie or possibly Gosling depending on his recovery from a groin strain coming back into the frame for a central midfield spot replacing Cabaye. I also expect Marvelous Marveaux to get a start although not sure on which side............... Who plays up front should be interesting as well. Will he stick with Best and Ba or drop one to the bench and bring in Lovenkrands? There's not a lot that can be done with our back four so expect the central pairing of Colo and Saylor to remain as is although I guess Perch could come into the equation against his old club. One possible approach is to reshuffle the full backs by moving Ryan Taylor across to the right and playing either Fergie or Perch on the left. Elliot will be in goal. I think the side may look something like this.................. Elliot Raylor, Saylor, Colo, Fergie Tiote, Gosling, Ben Arfa, Marveaux Lovenkrands, Ba If Gosling doesn't make it Danny Guthrie to take the central midfield slot. Bench from.............. Soderberg, Perch, Sameobi, Smith, Best, Stroller, Obertan. CWL
