League One side Sheffield Wednesday made the second round draw after a 4-2 win in a penalty shoot-out against Blackpool.
Cardiff City beat Oxford 3-1 after extra-time to avoid an upset and make the second round of the cup.
Barnet made it two away wins out of two for the start of the season as they defied their lowly stature to give Portsmouth a huge shock at Fratton Park. Mark Hughes got the goal in a deserved win for the Bees.
Northampton got revenge for last season's defeat at this stage of the League Cup by coming from behind to beat Ipswich 2-1. Paul Turnbull got the winner for the Cobblers.
Bury came from a goal behind to beat Championship side Coventry at Gigg Lane. The League One newboys rallied well despite trailing to Roy O'Donovan's early goal. An Andy Bishop strike and two Ryan Lowe goals did the damage for the hosts.
Morecambe pulled off one of the shocks of the round by beating Barnsley at Oakwell. Second half goals from Danny Carlton and Kevin Ellison ensured that it was a first home game to forget for Tykes manager Keith Hill.
Shrewsbury survived a second half fightback at Pride Park to dispatch Derby County 3-2. Going in 3-0 at the break, Shrewsbury looked like they might crumble as Derby got it back to 3-2 but held on for a major cup upset.
League Two side Macclesfield left the KC Stadium with a place in Round Two following a shock victory over Hull. Two calm finishes from Emile Sinclair saw the Silkmen run out 2-0 winners.
An epic encounter at the City Ground saw Nottingham Forest dispatch of Notts County 4-3 on penalties. 2-2 at full-time, a goal from Lee Hughes looked to have won it for County until a Wes Morgan wonder strike took the game to penalties.
Due to police advice, The Football League confirmed the postponement of the following Carling Cup Round 1 fixtures:
West Ham United v Aldershot Town
Charlton Athletic v Reading
Crystal Palace v Crawley Town
Bristol City v Swindon Town
They are looking to re-arrange these matches for the 2nd Round dates of 23rd & 24th August but this is yet to be confirmed by clubs.
