Carling Cup Round Quarter-Finals Manchester United 1-2 Crystal Palace Crystal Palace pulled off the shock of the tournament as they beat Manchester United in extra-time to make the Carling Cup semi-finals. After an even first-half, where the Championship side were more than a match for their opponents - Wilfried Zaha, in particular, looking impressive. Darren Ambrose came on at half-time, and it was he who opened the scoring with a wondrous 35-yard drive that gave United keeper Ben Amos no chance. Just four minutes later, Paddy McCarthy pulled Federico Macheda back and the Italian stepped up to slot home the penalty. For the final 20 minutes, neither team particularly threatened and the game moved into extra-time. It was Glenn Murray who was the hero though as he headed in a Darren Ambrose free-kick before the away side weathered a late storm. Chelsea 0-2 Liverpool Liverpool made it to the Carling Cup semi-finals after easing to a 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Reds had beaten the Blues at the Bridge in the Premier League already this month and followed that up with a strong performance. Andy Carroll missed a first-half penalty, but even after that they were much the better side. Maxi Rodriguez and Martin Kelly both scored in a five-minute second half spell as Liverpool extended their unbeaten run to 11 games. Things go from bad to worse for Chelsea though and Andre Villas-Boas cut a dejected figure at the end of the game. Arsenal 0-1 Manchester City A late counter attacking goal from Manchester City ensured that they booked their place in the Carling Cup semi-finals, while also earning their first victory at Arsenal for 36 years. The home side edged the first-half, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Park Chu-Young both going close. At the other end, Edin Dzeko spurned a couple of chances but he was involved in the winner on 83 minutes. After a disappointing Arsenal corner, Dzeko came forward with the ball before releasing Adam Johnson. The winger took one touch before flicking the ball inside for Sergio Aguero who clinically tucked away the only goal of the night. It was a cruel blow to the Gunners who had shaded the match, but there was real quality in the breakaway and Manchester City will be in the hat at Old Trafford tomorrow night. Cardiff 2-0 Blackburn Cardiff City produced a cupset of sorts as they made the League Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1966 with a comfortable win against Premier League strugglers Blackburn. An early Kenny Miller goal sent the Welsh side on their way after a great ball from Aron Gunnarsson before Scott Dann cleared off the line from Miller to keep Blackburn within touching distance. Rovers did threaten at times, with captain David Dunn going close before the break. After half-time, Cardiff continued to press and Filip Kiss doubled the lead with a fine header. From here, the Bluebirds were rarely troubled and ensured that there will be a team from the second-tier in the Carling Cup semi-final draw. CWL

Tuesday 24th January Cardiff City 1 - 0 Crystal Palace (Half-time 1 - 0) 1. 1 - 0 Gardner (og 7) McCarthy (sent off 78) Crystal Palace Cardif go through to final after winning penalty shoot out. Final Result from Cardiff City Stadium - Heaton: It was a great night Cardiff hero Tom Heaton said it was a great night for the club after his penalty saves put them in to the Carling Cup final. He said: "It's a great night for Cardiff City. I was a spectator for much of the game and when I got involved it was great to play a part in getting us to Wembley. We played some great football tonight and made some great chances and kept going, and that's a sign of where the team are, we didn't give up and there was still a great feeling that it was going to be our night." - Freedman proud despite exit Crystal Palace boss Dougie Freedman said he was proud of his team's performance, despite their semi-final exit to Cardiff. He said: "Obviously I'm disappointed with the outcome but the lads were tremendous, we've won a lot of hearts on the back of that performance. Cardiff are an outstanding team, never mind we'd only got 10 men, but we came at them. We've come a long way in such a short space of time. We've taken a lot from this and hopefully will move on quickly." - Mackay delighted with 'keeper heroics Cardiff manager Malky Mackay was delighted with goalkeeper Tom Heaton, following his penalty heroics which helped see off Crystal Palace. Heaton saved two spotkicks as Cardiff prevailed 3-1 on penalties. Mackay said: "Considering the first leg, maybe there was a bit of justice. We beat someone else on penalties in the competition. The guys who took the penalties had a steely nerve and determination, and I'm absolutely delighted for Tom Heaton, who has been our cup goalkeeper." - Cardiff through to Wembley Cardiff booked their spot in the 2012 Carling Cup final with a 3-1 win on penalties against Crystal Palace. An early own goal from Anthony Gardner cancelled out the lead he had given Palace in the first leg, and despite a glut of chances, Cardiff couldn't find a way through. Palace even survived the sending off of Paddy McCarthy 12 minutes before the end of normal time, and held on to force the game to penalties. Tom Heaton was the hero as he saved two spotkicks, to help the Championship reach the final, where they will face either Liverpool or Manchester City. CWL
