So if there is say, 6 candidates, and I don't fancy 2 of them at all, I don't have to put a cross next to them at all?? Is that right? I'm getting more confused by the min!!

Ann, you dont have to vote for anyone you dont want to, but you can hav a 1st choice, 2nd choice 3rd choice etc, so if your 1st choice dont get in, then your 2nd choice may . So if you dont want to vote tory, then dont put a cross next to them. If the person gets the most votes but doesnt get more than half the votes, then under the current system they would have still won. Under AV, they will not win as 2nd choice vote will be added to the pile. then its all added up again. it will stop us being ruled by a minority, which the current system allows. Its a fairer system. Not by any means ideal, but better than what we have at the moment.

Interesting to see voter power would be increased by +34% yet I vote in an Ultra Safe seat so the actual change under AV would in all probability be zero. Still may well shake some politicians up quite a bit knowing they need in excess of 50% of the overall vote to stay as an MP. Such is the amount of voter apathy where I am currently they could put a pig up as Labour candidate and it would be elected. CWL

Where I am the safe seat would decrease by 8%.The least marginal would increase by over 50%. I dunno-I'd like to see who that marginal was before I'd commit to anything

Well, I'm moving in favour of AV, if only to try something different!! I think voters and politicians need to have a good shake up, so I suppose it's worth a go!!

I dunno-I'd like to see who that marginal was before I'd commit to anything Remember Shads the key thing with AV is that it only comes into play should the first choice candidate not receive more than 50% of the vote. Currently 'Marginal' seats are just that, the vote is split so with first past the post it only takes one vote more than anyone else for them to win. that means you could have a vote which is like this............. Candidate A gets 35 votes Candidate B gets 34 votes Candidate C gets 33 votes Effectively two thirds of voters did not want the person who has won in power............... With AV that would not be the case as voters who wanted Candidate C selected have an alternative choice so can still make their vote count even if not their ideal. Unpopular candidates are still very unlikely to be selected as they will not get sufficient second choice votes to put them above the 50% mark no matter what the no vote campaign claim to the contrary. Will people vote for change without thinking it through?
It suits Nick Clegg and his advisers, but what is their long term plan? To have more say ? Who knows?
How important is this referendum?

It's not important at all and everyone knows it, be interesting when the participation percentages are published, I predict a record low.
