Today I went up to Newbiggin, then walked along the beach/rocks almost to Lynemouth, then back again. The beach there, of course, was littered with coal pebbles and dust a couple of inches deep. I began to wish I had a coal fire so I could gather some......"something for nowt".....you don't get much of that these days! Further on, nearer Lynemouth two lads were collecting bits of metal, old wiring that they were stripping the outer covering from. Thinking about this I wondered how much they made.....I know it can be lucrative for the "big boys" who go about it on an industrial scale but it could be worthwhile for somebody who has time on their hands to have a go at it. One of the problems, I suppose is storing it....it wouldn't look nice on you're patio among the daffodils! Also I know there's been a lot in the 'papers about the criminal aspect....manhole covers/Metro overhead copper wire...that sort of thing. Still, theres a lot of stuff just lying around. I'm off to get my sack!

Jazz-I think at the moment copper prices are still high which is why scrap thieves take so many risks collecting it,particularly from the high voltage cables. Where I used to live scrapping was a virtual industry-many people did it and it wasnt uncommon to see young kids help strip the cables in the garden. Not just copper, but lead, aluminium etc-altho copper was most prized as it brought more money.I knew of some who earned hundreds and hundreds in a week from the scrap yards. After our fire, before the house was boarded up copper thieves broke in whilst we were in hospital and stole the copper water boiler, causing even more damage by flooding the downstairs which had been untouched by the fire. These were people I knew but the desire for money over-rode any sympathy they had for us I took a small amount up to Blaydon years back-some copper light covers my mam was chucking out and got a canny amount for it and there were quite a few people there with similar amounts. There was also queues of old dodgy vans and cars loaded with scrap and cable-bright shiny new copper-you knew it was nicked but in those days not many questions were asked

What people dont realise about scrap is the end of the line is in China because of their growing economy they cant get enough raw materials so their demand is driving up the price of scrap People dont seem realise they are doing to their own country what the British did to the colonies years ago and striped them of their resources.

I did know that nick And I agree with you-the price of metals makes scrapping a lucrative business-so you get lead taken from churches, people taking their lives in their hands cutting through live cables to try and get as much as possible.I know that the power cable copper is worth a small fortune-people I know on the dole had foreign holidays, new cars all sorts after a few days of what they called "grafting". Some got nicked and did time and some got burned but they dont stop doing it.

East coast mainline is always affected by thieves. I feel sorry for the farmers who are targeted by the Diesel and heating oil thieves. Expect to see a lot more of it in the near future when times get tougher.

Aye, its a lucrative trade but covered with all sorts of problems. A week or two ago I had a small amount of bathroom pipes etc from my mate who was "doing up" a house. However I didn't bother as the scrap firm near me was closed so just took them to the council recycling dump. When our bathroom was done recently the old bath was left outside the gate....the next morning it was gone as it was an old metal one. Years ago I was lucky enough to obtain a cast iron container full of Mercury and sold it for quite a bit of money. My recent interest in scrap metal set me off looking for websites about it....there are quite a few but its difficult to find actual prices online......unless you are one of these commodity brokers.......I want to know how much you would get for a couple of stone (or kilos in the new stuff!). PS. ANYBODY GOT ANY OLD GOLD THEY WANT SHIFTING......CAN COLLECT

Back to this old thread. Took some more old piping and wiring....not much, about 5 kilos I would have thought, and was surprised to be given £21 for it. I'd imagined that it would be worth, say about £8 so was pleased to receive that amount. May start scavenging around now I've got the bug....nothing illegal mind, I hasten to add!

Before he told me he'd got scrap in the boot, I was driving around thinking the car was on it's last legs!!!! Every time I turned a corner, there was clunks and clanks, it was only when I went to Tesco and tried to put stuff in the boot, I saw it, first thought was "what the ***********"!!!!!!!! I'm sorry we hoyed the other stuff down the tip now!!!! Didn't realise it was so lucrative!!!!
