We've dug a well and have a good supply of candles in!!!! ;D It does make sense now though, why some people risk life and limb to get these cables and tings from the railways!!!!! I could never understand it before!!

Ann you wouldnt believe how much money can be made. Some blokes bragged that it was literally hundreds-a day Copper was certainly the most lucrative altho I think lead and aluminium were also taken. When copper prices started to rise a few years back dozens of youths were getting involved in "scrapping"-you'd get a group of lads club together to buy a cheap car-say thirty/forty quid and use it for a few nights to gather metal-they didnt bother with tax, insurance and in many cases driving licences. They would make a good amount of money and when the car was eventually found and confiscated by police it wasnt traceable to them and was discarded. They couldnt have cared less if it was crushed. Next week they'd have a new old one For some its almost like a job-something theyve done most of their lives and Ive seen blokes taking young lads out to "look for a bit of scrap"-once the lads get a bit of money in their pocket they would start doing it themselves and the cycle continued. And then off they'd be on their foreign holidays etc

i have an old market stall made from steel bars and weighs a ton, iwas thinking about dumping it at the refuse place but this thread got me thinking i may get some money for it, the scrap yard is closer than the refuse place so i may take it there first to see if they will take it, hope my car suspension will take it .

Well if it doesnt you could always chuck in the car as well Joking aside-I used to call these we buy anything places to dispose of my cars when they came to the end of their lives and the most I ever got was a tenner-usually got nowt But then I started taking them down Stoneygate and I was getting forty/fifty quid scrap value. Mind you have to take the wheels off once there and drain all the fluids out-but still worth it

i got £30 for my old VW transporter van a few years ago, i did not want to get rid of it but the tax had ran out and i had to funds at the time to tax it, mind you the brakes were close to needing done and the bodywork was held together by the paint and some filler but the engine was great, i had that van for about 3 to 4 years flew through all it's Mots it was my ruff and ready, it only let me down once when the battery packed up, if id had the cash at the time i would probably still have it today out of all the motors ive had it was my favourite one even if it was a bit of a scrapper.

I had a micra a bit like that-brilliant engine and it had been well looked after by its previous owner but had to get rid of it after the gearbox dropped down and I couldnt afford the repairs. The bloke who took it-supposedly to dispose of it gave me nowt for it as it was an old car-it was one of my favorite cars. I was gutted when I found out it hadnt been scrapped but had been done up and sold on-still guess if the bloke had the parts and knowhow cant blame him for making money out of it-just wish I had too

take the price of a new car, then take off the ammount id get trade in after 3 years, then so the warrenty stays valid and trade in value is not reduced you have to have it serviced by the main dealership which is not cheap, then because it's a new car the insurance is higher, take off the trade in price from a new car after 3 years i think i could buy a very good second hand one with full sevice history and full mot each year for the next 5 to 6 years for what id be paying for a new one.

Just a thought. canny tin hat on. ;D Lol Polly-was a time I bought a new old car EVERY year and never had to have an MOT either. But since moving the supply of cheap old cars has dried up-and I splashed out a bit more to get this one with a view to it being kept longer
