Hearing about this tragic event it struck me just how frequently natural disasters seem to be occurring recently. We've just had a horrendous winter which was common to alot of countries in the Northern Hemisphere and due as I understand it to a change in the Gulf Stream. There was also the floods in Australia and Pakistan.Hurricanes in Haiti and New Orleans etc.And volcanic activity in Iceland.Might be sheer co-incidence but it does seem to be in the news alot more now. When I moved back up here after ten years in London I definitely noticed changes. The amount of fields flooded that we can see from our house are untrue.Having grown up in this area I know it wasnt always so. Is mother nature having a word in our ear here?

Mother nature could indeed be giving the world a yellow card.

Lets hope it doesn't turn into a red card! I've been doing my usual walks in and around fields and you're right Shads the ground is extremely waterlogged.

Having seen the massive destruction in Japan caused by the most powerful earthquake ever to hit that country another timely reminder of how insiginificant we are compared to Mother Nature.
Amazing scenes...................my thoughts and prayers today are with all the people across the world affected by this natural disaster.

Absolutely CWL Unbelievable that this is only three weeks on from the New Zealand quake I posted about originally I know the Pacific region is used to volcanic activity but there seems to be an awful lot of it recently

We underestimate the power of nature at our peril.

So upsetting seeing the images coming out of Japan and the death toll steadily rising I've been hearing many accounts of just how experienced and practiced the Japanese people are in dealing with these sort of events and there are examples of that during this event also-but this was of such magnitude that it seems it would have been impossible to prepare fully for it. My heart goes out to people affected by events like this-they lose everything and if they survive face such a hard immediate future just trying to stay alive led alone trying to rebuild the lives they once had.Truly awful

Yes, agree and concur with all the above sentiments. It makes our "waterlogged fields" a few posts ago look trivial compared to the horrendous scenes etc in Japan. My cousin has a son living in Tokyo but fortunately him & his wife are ok.....they were travelling by train across a bridge over a river when the 'quake struck. They evacuated the train & had to walk along the track to the next station. Their home, too was undamaged so they were lucky....maybe they were away from the main area of destruction.

It's the scale of these things that always astounds me................ The epi centre for this earthqauke was some 250 miles away from Tokyo in the North East of Japan just off the coast. Yet the buildings in the City were shaking like it was just around the corner. That's like it happening just off the coast between Blyth and Newbiggin, but Polly's house in Perterborough falling down around his and Mrs P's head. 8000 times more powerful than the one in Auckland...............I just struggle to come to terms with events like this.
