That wonderful time is about 5 weeks away the cars MOT, luckily for me my sons friend is a mechanic and so is one of our neighbours so a couple of bottles of beer or a McDonalds is all it costs for labour, I have just had the tie rods, track rods and drop links and brakes done and replaced some exhaust rubbers, had the tracking done as well, but last month I had to get a garage to change the starter motor due to it been in an awkward place no one wanted to do it even the garage mechanic nearly started crying, the labour for that cost £60 but I scored on the starter motor, in new condition £20, fingers and toes crossed that nothing else needs done, just hunting around for the cheapest MOT place now, I think a place in Dunston is £30 or £35 anyone know anywhere doing cheap MOTs.

Mrs Milky's car passed last week, which is not bad for a 14 year old car which she had from new. My car was new last November so no worries for a while.

it's my cars 10th birthday in December, it has never failed an MOT yet, it came close last year due to corroded brake pipes but I got an advisory and replaced them straight away, I try to keep on top of things and spread repairs over the year so it is not a big shock when it comes to the MOT, plus I would rather get things done when they need to be done, I give it a regular oil and filter change so hopefully it will last another 10 years.

I'd I've thought that with "Friends" and Neighbours" as mechanics who have worked on the car, they would - should - be in a position to tell you whether it would pass an annual test or not!

My car's due this month as well and Im terrified.I know its got some issues but Ive not been in a position to do anything about them.I'll be replacing one of the tyres-little things like that are fairly obvious and easily rectified-the tyre isnt illegal but it has a slow puncture which is getting on my nerves. But it does have an air leak around the brake pedal area-this has been going on for quite some time now-it was doing its hissing job through its last MOT and service but the guys at Vauxhall didnt see it as a problem-my cars a Renault but it was bought from there-one of their part exchanges.Ive recently noticed its revving up whilst stationary and Ive got a feeling its all to do with air getting in the system-and Im seeing a reduction in its braking performance which is a source of concern. Im not getting it MOT'D at Vauxhall this year tho-despite being on their service plan. I had a service under that agreement and they tried to hit me with nearly two thousand pounds worth of work a few months after I bought the car from them. They told me the clutch needed replacing and nine months later theres not a bloody thing wrong with it-the cost for that alone was quoted as over six hundred quid.Ive bought plenty of clutches new for sixty quid and had some-one fit them for me on previous cars-its a bloody mick take. Years back I knew many people who would work on my cars but these days I dont know anyone. Theres a place in Washington my dad uses-MOT is around the thirty quid mark-its called "Little Bills"-they seem canny good-when I followed him down there last year my old neighbour was there getting her car done and she thought highly of them-its a small garage. Milkhope I think most of us are very aware that you get a new car about every three years through the Motability scheme-so of course you wont be having the same worries

Recommendation from friends are usually a safe bet in my experience - and many others - I've found.

Im hoping so BRS. Fell into the trap of signing up for this stupid service thing because I didnt actually pay for my car-my mother bought it for me-and Im indebted to her for that-but I felt that I had to prove my gratitude by promising to take the best care of it I could and for that reason I took out the service agreement. My dad did mention that he wouldnt trust a dealership in a million years and usually Id have agreed but at the time I felt pretty crap that I couldnt buy the car myself. And most times we would have managed-Ive been without a car many many times-but its the same question every time-what about the hospital stays for Nathaniel. I am not going to pay thousands to keep this 02 Scenic on the road but if this garage can help me keep it going for a bit longer I'll be happy

:)G'Day - Shads.
Let them take a look and advise you as to the cost. You will be in a better position to make a decision on whether to spend the money on repairs or not. Don't let them start the work without your approval first - but I'm sure you wouldn't let that happen anyway.
Must leave now. Catch up later. x

Shadow, hope it turns out OK. The problem is that most cars are now computer managed, which makes it difficult for family and friends to assist. My car is more suited to an IT tech rather than a mechanic.

I dont understand that Milkhope.
Most cars are now computer managed ?
If you mean finance Id agree but finance wont be maintaining my car-I know if theres a problem and right now I know there is a problem then no computer and call centre person will sort that out-nor an IT tech person.I want a person that understands cars as in a mechanic-to sort the problem out.

Shads the engine revving whilst stationary could be a few things, engine management sensor, throttle idle sensor, fuel injectors might need a clean you can get stuff you add to you're fuel that is supposed to clean them , it is not an uncommon thing there is something you can try I have heard sometimes works, disconnect the battery this should reset everything then reconnect and start the car with the clutch pressed in that has worked for some people, there are a lot of ways to cut garage costs as well, supply you're own parts, buy off eBay or Euro car parts on the Team Valley it's a lot cheaper if you order from them online, no credit card needed they just reserve the part for you till the end of the day you pay when you pick up, North East tyres next to the Mecca bingo at Gateshead do a lot more than just tyres and they are quite cheap for car repairs and their tyre prices are excellent, try looking online there are forums for every type of car and people help each other with car problems, you could contact Gateshead college they used to do car repairs for people for a small fee, im not sure if they still do, yes the jobs were done by trainee mechanics but supervised by a time served mechanic, this part of the college is just down the road from you also on the Team Valley.

We got ours done end of Feb, it had £146 worth of "stuff" done on it We had hair like stuff coming out of the exhaust pipe, we thought someone had stuffed something up it!! But apparently it's the material that's in the exhaust to stop the noise (or something like that) so sooner or later we'll have to get a new exhaust. More soddin' expense Then we had to get a new front tyre, it was like a snooker ball, and the other is fast getting there!! It's bloody endless, it's 11 years old now but we'll keep it till it falls apart! Hopefully by then we'll be too bloody old to drive anyway!
