Most forums I've come across tend to fall into the same category, theres the people who get on with each other, even though their opinions might differ they are still able to get along. theres the people who won't get along and will dig and poke at the others and of course the trolls. The Evening Gazette is totally different on there you're either part of the labour 'cabal' or a fascist whether you are or not and it is so deep rooted now that they'll never sort it out or get it back into the hands of the people who used it before, but who left (or were forced to leave) in droves. The whole lot of it is being spoilt by a tiny minority who have no other means of expressing themselves. Anyway, that's my moan over, is it dinner time yet I'm starving? Welcome db hope you become very happy here.....Enjoy but watch those mods.....They keep nicking me karmas :-

The whole lot of it is being spoilt by a tiny minority who have no other means of expressing themselves. Anyway, that's my moan over, is it dinner time yet I'm starving? Welcome db, some interesting observations you make in your post. Some of the best forums I visit don't have 24/7 Moderators, however the people who do the task follow these basic guidelines. They regulate members views, but don't necessarily directly censor. No one opinion is allowed to dominate, they maintain balance and keep within prescribed or agreed measures or boundaries. What those are varies from forum to forum, but most uphold a set of values or principles regarded as appropriate by society in general. That way allowances are made for differing opinions, but not at the detriment of the forum community as a whole. In some scenarios it is the role of the moderator to both pacify and arbitrate or certainly uphold the laws/rules laid down which all members on joining agreed to follow. Where the above is not practised or in place chaos or total anarchy reigns. It is a sad state of affairs when Moderators are perhaps left with little choice other than to use the range of powers at their disposal. Including in some cases that of revoking said membership. Moderators don't need to be on a forum 24/7 to remove someone. Revoking membership may well be considered extreme in itself however it will not be done arbitrarily. The counter view of course often used by those on the receiving end of such action is that it is a denial of freedom of speech. Well that may also be true. However is the fact a small minority are promoting a very polarised view of the world or that of a specific situation, confronting all who perhaps stand in their way by whatever means available, not not exactly the same thing or at least questionable regarding true motive. Where the main agenda of an individual or more members of this vocal minority is nothing more than to dictate or inflict their views upon a larger majority with the sole aim of shocking or destroying the community they have infiltrated. It is the primary role of both Admin and the Mods on this forum, plus the daunting challenge they face, to prevent that situation from ever arising in the first place. Appreciate the above is a very formal viewpoint, but db please remember both Admin and we Mods are also members here. We only want what is best for the forum community as a whole. CWL

I dont understand how revoking a posters membership is denying them their freedom of speech They may have a right to freedom of speech but they dont have the right to post on here. Its not what you say that causes trouble its how you say it

Nick, it's a counter argument put forward by some who have had this done to them...................I don't necessarily agree with them although I concede it could be perceived to be the case. CWL

I dont understand how revoking a posters membership is denying them their freedom of speech I think the "banned" person would possibly see it as denying them freedom of speech, by not allowing them to say what they want, when/where they want to. It is a fine line, but as CWL says, in the end we only want what is best for members, and above all, a happy forum!!

The Admins and Mods on this forum being themselves members is the cruxes of the matter. They want the best for this forum just the same as any other member does. The EC/EG mods aren't members it's part of their job. I'm sure they have other responsibility at work besides the forum, and my impression was they regarded moderating the forum as a bit of a bind, and only did so when they've got nothing better to do. It is not an infringement of people freedom of speech if that person is offensive or abusive to others. I use the analogy of someone going into a pub and being offensive swearing and being abusive to others, he will be banned for the good of the pub and all the others within it. The same principle applies to a forum.
