ive had a Xbox360 sitting in a cupboard for over a year it suffered the red ring of death, on Wednesday i was clearing some stuff out and was going to bin it but i decided to take it apart and see if i could fix it, i was amazed at how easy it was, i stripped it down removed the heatsinks cleaned off the old thermal paste and reset all the solder, after that i redone the thermal paste fitted the heatsinks, due to the x clamps refitting the heatsinks was the hardest part, put the console back together and now it's working fine no RRD, a cant believe some people are paying £30+ for this sort of job it's simple, all you need is 2 small flat head screw drivers small enough to fit in the holes on the side of an xbox and 2 torque drives T9 and T10 some dcent thermal paste and some cleaning fluid to remove the old paste, all these items can be purchased at a good computer store, now dont rush off to PC World, i said a good computer store , if anyone has a Xbox360 with RRD and decide to try and fix let me know if you need any tips, you can get lots of advice and vids on how to from youtube but be careful some of the peolpe are idiots, DO NOT use a blow torch on your 360 motherboard you will fry it this way.

fixed a few more xbox 360s but trying to stick to those with disc drive problems they tend to be easier to fix, i have found some red ring of death ones are not always down to heat problems ive fixed a few simply by cleaning out the dust just like the PS3 the Xbox360 sucks up dust like a dyson, anyone wanting to fix a broken xbox or if fitting a cpu to a computer use Ebay to get your thermal paste, computer stores charge around £10 for a 4g tube of Arctic silver on Ebay you can get a 20g tube of Arctic MX-4 for £12.99 the MX-4 is a far better compound than the silver so for the price you cant go wrong.
