A spin off from my question on another thread regarding Newcastle Brown Ale, now commonly known as Dog.
I don't recall the name Dog being used in my early days of drinking. If I ever drank bottled beer I preferred its sister product Amber Ale. When drinking in pubs in and around Newcastle my personal preference used to be what was then called "a pint of Scotch" Again I don't recall what it was really called but the Scotch thing is obviously derived from Scottish and Newcastle Breweries. There was also Exhibition which for me came a close second to Scotch.
Strangely enough my local was a Bass Worthington House and they had what we called BBB Bass Best Bitter - not a bad brew at all in my opinion.
Nice to hear your opinions and preferences in the wide and varied World of Ales.

Yes, Fairsy that was our preferred drink.....it was either a pint of Scotch or Ex or Amber Ale if you wanted a bottle. When I first started working away down south, I sometimes forgot and asked for a pint of Scotch....of course the barman thought I was ordering Scotch whisky.......a common mistake made by north east drinkers years ago. ;D

reminds me of NUFC away to Portsmouth in the 80s i asked for a pint of scotch and the woman behind the bar thought i meant whisky, i ended up drinking bitter as it was the nearest thing they had to scotch.

Interesting, the naming and origins of beers etc. This is what I was drinking at "The Forth" last night at our regular monthly meetings. It was brewed in Cornwall and named after a dangerous sandbank on the River Camel estuary......the Doom Bar. Attachments:

Aaahhh that's nice of ye, Jazz It is indeed a canny sup (tried quite afew of NB's finest). But the best bit of all is ...............the brewery's only about 700M from me back door!!! ;D ;D ;D If anybody is ever up around Bedlington I can wholeheartedly recommend not only the ales but the food is superb too and the staff are extremely friendly.........Canny, you ever sampled the NB?
