EWOOD PARK, LANCASHIRE (BBC) - February 1, 2012
Gabriel Obertan's 91st minute strike helped secure three points for visiting Newcastle and also set off a chain of events that has lead many Doomsday prophesizers to suggest that the wheels are in motion for eternal destruction on December 21, 2012, as predicted by the Mayans.
Obertan's strike was his first Premier League goal in 20 appearances for Newcastle and Manchester United and only his second for an English club since his transfer in 2009. The goal was Obertan's first on English soil. He had somehow managed to score in a 2010 Champions League match with Manchester United away to Bursaspor after the Turkish power had pulled their goalie for an extra attacker.
The victory elevated Newcastle to sole-5th in the table, trailing Chelsea by just three points after the 23rd round of matches. Newcastle supporters had been particularly tough on Obertan in recent months and this goal will do nothing to assuage fears that something will soon go wrong. Obertan's calling card of the 2011/12 season had been his remarkable ability to create openings with his pace, before ultimately succumbing to a pratfall, typically at the expense of possession or a legitimate scoring chance.
It is not just Newcastle supporters, though, who are wary after Obertan's transformation into a goal-hawk. After experiencing an increase in volcanic activity, the melting of polar ice caps, nontraditional weather patterns, and several other natural changes, those who subscribe to the Mayan prophecy have found another piece of their puzzle.
It was written some 5,125 years ago that, "A man with the face of a bewildered light bulb shall lead his people to glory, but in that glory we shall meet our demise." While many marvel at the Mayan's ability to pinpoint the precise date of the Rapture, few acknowledge their scientific ability to know what a light bulb was some 4,992 years before it was patented by American inventor Thomas Edison.
While Newcastle's away defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup seemed to ease fears among Newcastle supporters that the world was upside down, Obertan's strike has reopened those doubts. When asked for his thoughts following the week's recent events, Kilroy Buffington, a Newcastle native, responded, "Given our place in the table and now Obertan of all people realizing what a goal is, I feel safe in saying that the end of the world must be near."
Newcastle are home to Aston Villa on Sunday.
