" It's a good beer and a bottle beer the Norths' biggest sale. For complete satisfaction Newcaste Brown Ale" Tune Cushy Butterfield. Aye, that's right, I remember that now.....funny how some adverts stick in your mind....probably because it's a beer!

Remember the advert. Matter of interest! I've been away so long, when and why did they start calling broon, dog? Is it "a hair of the dog......" thing? Any takers?

Fairsy it's been called Dog for as long as I can remember and that's from being a child. Parents were in Pub and Club trade. Had to do with it having a 'bite' or some such stuff hence the term Dog. Although I always used to laugh at one or two locals who came in one of the pubs we had that simply called it Fallin Doon Water. Mind you there was a few brews like that..............Exhibition being one of mine later in life. CWL

I've always thought that Broon was called "dog" because of the fact that the husband of the house was supposed to be "taking the dog for a walk" but in fact he was off to the pub/club for a pint/s of that rich brown brew called Newcastle brown ale! ;D Newcastle Amber Ale was Broon's sister ale with a similar shaped bottle & label.
