The fixture list has supplied a Boxing Day away trip to Bolton for The Toon Army this time out. Regrettably our travels on this particular day over the years have not supplied much cheer with our last away victory as far back as 1988/89 against Sheffield Wednesday. I will avoid mentioning what also happened in that season.................
This will also be the third Boxing day encounter for the Toon v The Trotters in the last ten years. With most visits across into Lancashire not exactly proving fruitful to say the least.
After a particularly disappointing mid week defeat to The Baggies hopefully The Toon can get back on track with a decent result against a Bolton side which has also been suffering trials and tribulations this season. Owen Colyes side have been struggling for points most of the time and only this week thanks to an away victory at Blackburn managed to claw themselves off the bottom spot.
As against West Brom our two long term injuries are both still out. While Danny Guthrie and Peter Lovenkrands have now been joined by Davide Santon who picked up a knee injury in Wednesdays fixture although how serious it is remains unknown to me.
One positive piece of positive news is that following his one match suspension Cabaye The Lad will come back into the reckoning for a starting place. After the defensive horror show in mid week it will be interesting to see if Mike Williamson also makes a return.
For Bolton the only man I'm aware of injured and unlikely to start is Marcos Alonso (foot).
The Mags recent form has not so much been a dip as a virtual chasm opening up beneath them. With only the points benefit from a fantastic start possibly alieviating the degree of concern among suppporters.
This is going to be a tough game to call and I'm never happy trying to predict what will happen knowing the opposition are as much in need of a result as we are. For that reason only I would take the draw now and accept anything in the way of three points as a massive bonus.
