So no surprises here-greatest rise in unemployment in the North East and the dashing of hopes for so many youngsters.I'd be interested to hear our members thoughts on why this is happening.Theres the theory going round that youngsters lack the work ethic -do they And the old chestnut of foreigners "taking our jobs"-do they? I have some thoughts on the matter which I'd be happy to debate but would like to see some other opinions on this

I think it's a combination of things, rather than one reason alone. Obviously the economic situation now doesn't help, but also the education system is to blame as well. They are encouraging everyone and their dog to go to uni, and half the time they do subjects which are useless. It's all well and good to learn for the sake of learning, but these days they need to take subjects that give them a head start in getting jobs. How many take Media Studies??? There was a lass on Newsnight the other night, doing Song Writing? I'm dammed sure the likes of Paul McCartney or Noel Gallagher didn't do song writing in Uni!!! There are also kids who don't have a work ethic either, they want to start at the top, start on 20 quid an hour, with a BMW company car! Instead of encouraging even more to go to uni, the employers should be made to open up the apprenticeship scheme again, as they did years ago!!
But young people also need to be realistic about wages as well. When I started my apprenticeship, I got 2 quid a week!! I know it was a "few" years ago, but it was all relative, the factory girls got about £6/7 a week!! I know I'm making it sound as if I blame the young people, I'm not, but they have to be realistic about things as well. If they have to forego all the latest gizzmos, mobiles, latest fashions then so be it!
The government have to do their part as well, drop the retirement age and give younger people a chance, 60/65 is ample for people to work till. The longer the old people work, the less jobs there are for kids. What companies should do is before an experienced worker retires, they should take a young person on to "shadow" them and learn the job, on "the job"! IMO it's a far better way to learn a job, than all the college courses!
And most of all, do away with this dammed "celebrity culture" and reality shows, which makes kids think all they have to do is "look good" (and that's a matter of opinion!!! Some look like extra thin flamin' Satsumas!!) And bring back the Tech Colleges, which used to teach those less academic kids useful trades!
As for immigration, yes I think the time has come to limit it, apart from the jobs aspect, the infrastructure cannot take it!! Only allow those who have a job to come to, in. And that goes for everyone, EU countries as well. And limit it to wife/husband/partner and kids. Not uncles, aunts, grandparents, cousins three times removed etc!!! Think I'll quit whilst I'm behind!! ;D

A job is a job. Does it matter who takes that job? Its all too easy to blame unemeployment on immigration. Immigration/emmigration has changed the world. We are small world and travel is easy now. The USA was built on immigrants, as was Australia. My dream is to see a world without borders where everyone can roam freely to where the work is to support themselves. There wouldnt be any wars as there would be no borders to dispute anymore. We couldnt blame any other group of people for our woes as we would all be one people.

Well it does matter who gets the job, I'd rather my granddaughter get it than someone from overseas. Unless countries are willing to spend money on infrastructure, there will always have to be borders. Parts of this country are already overcrowded, and the places that aren't are places that have no jobs and people don't want to live there. I really don't want to see this country turned into one big housing estate!!

But if the world was one big housing estate then we would all be equal, wouldnt we? If we saw ourselves as one world, then we wouldnt need to wait for other countries to make changes, as we would all be changing together. If we all pooled our money and shared it out amongst all the people of the world, then there would be no poor people. The richest minority own the majority of land, business and property. How is this fair? We could hve used the money we spent in war with iraq and Afghanistan to create jobs and houses for all. When the government talk about not having enough money, they leave out the money that they have wasted. When managing our own personal budgets it would be obvious that if we spent it all on fighting, then we wouldnt leave enough to pay our bills. Its actually really simple. The billions spent on killing people could have been spent on saving people. So hey, lets do that. Or is that too simple a plan? ??

Yes, it is too simple a plan but being a "simple" person myself I'm all for it! The trouble is, in any group of people some people are leaders (for better or worse) and once some people taste power and start to organize other people that's when the problems start. I'm a natural follower, not leader so I could, and have been "led up the garden path" a few times but being philosophical, I tend to think "Ah, well, that's life".........am I being apathetic or what, I don't know?!

Exactly Jazz, thats why communism doesnt work. There always has to be leaders who start feeling more powerful. Thats why Socialism is a more realistic plan.

Unemployment is a necessity of the capitalist system.
It doesn't exist in any other "Social" society - or otherwise.
