The Premier League has released the 25-name - or mostly fewer - squads from all 20 teams. Each club must have a squad containing no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the home-grown player criteria while the remainder - up to a total of 25 - must be home-grown. A home-grown player means one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21). Under-21 players (for the 2011/12 campaign those born on or after 1st January 1990) are eligible over and above the limit of 25 players, which explains why the likes of Mario Balotelli are not listed at Manchester City even though he is a part of the first team. This is the squad for The Toon: Ameobi, Ba, Ben Arfa, Best, Cabaye, Coloccini, Elliot, Guthrie, Gutierrez, Harper, Krul, Lovenkrands, Marveaux, Obertan, Perch, Simpson, Smith, S Taylor, R Taylor, Tiote, Williamson. From the looks of it many of our under 21 brigade are not mentioned or there are no details at present. CWL

Bit more clarity on what I believe are our players for selection to the First Team................. Goalkeepers: Harper, Krul & ElliotDefenders: Coloccini, Perch, Simpson, S Taylor & WilliamsonMidfielders: Ben Arfa, Cabaye, Guthrie, Gutierrez, Marveaux, Obertan, R Taylor, Smith & TioteStrikers: Shola Ameobi, Ba, Best & Lovenkrands.Of those players at Newcastle under-21 (specifically, they must have been under 21 on 1st January 2011) which can form part of the squad effectively for free. I believe these are the likely candidates for possible selection: Defenders: Santon Midfielders: Abeid, Vuckic, Ferguson, GoslingStrikers: Ranger and Sammy AmeobiThe above is only my view of the situation regarding players outside of those officially mentioned in the 25 by the Premier League. Note it doesn't include any players currently out on loan. Also should I find out any further details will post accordingly. If there are any others that could or should come under consideration in your view then please post them for everyone to see. CWL

Despite having named 21 players it feels very thin in the defence. The fact that we have to rely on someone like Perch to fill the ranks should there be injuries is frightening. Think it is a shame about Kadar, he has been looking promising when he has played but isn't even considered for the first team any more. How much have you seen of Tavernier? Could he compete against Simpson when he gets back from the loan? I hope Pardew won't throw in Smith at the expense of the youngsters as he did against West Browm last season and against Fulham in the last match. On the strikers I'd say Ba is Premier League class when he is in shape and on form. Best and Shola has proven that they can score the odd goal but they aren't what I'd rely on to bring us forward (haha ). For some reason Løvenkrands doesn't even want to appear on the pitch now. Sammy looks interesting but it also feels like Pardew wants to try the youngsters as little as possible.

Despite having named 21 players it feels very thin in the defence. Look at Everton mate. Thats a thin squad We are fine. Don't try to make it look worse than it is. It helps nobody.

Okay the entire squad is not exactly rubbish, but come on Magpie even you must be able to see our defence is thin on the ground.................. Colo and Saylor at centre Back with only Perch as cover, hardly inspiring. Anyone know how long Williamson is expected to be out? Also despite the signing of Santon our cover at Full Back appears to comprise of two converted midfield players in Ryan Taylor and possibly young Ferguson. Tavernier is IMO like Ferguson full of promise, however I'm not sure it would be such a good thing to just throw him into the fray and hope he comes good. That's why I was pleased he went out on loan to Carlisle. Not sure when he is due back though! I wonder if Cabaye or Gosling can play right back? Keepers and Midfield looks strong, which is a bonus. Up front I guess results and time will tell............... although both Best and Lovenkrands were reported as being up for sale during the transfer window so read into that what you will. Nile Ranger is not doing himself any good what so ever with his off field antics. Although surprisingly the Club still appear reluctant to let him go out on loan. The fact all of them are still at the Toon can be looked upon many ways both positively and negatively. Bottom line is I just hope between them our forwards can score enough vital goals to keep us out of trouble. Trump cards are that somewhere along the way Ben Arfa and Sammy Ameobi may well scare the hell out of sides, given fitness and the opportunity to do so. All in all not a lot more as supporters we can do other than encourage them as this is what we have available until January........................ whether we like it or not. CWL

Carlisle United boss Greg Abbott will speak to his Newcastle counterpart Alan Pardew this week about extending James Tavernier's loan deal. Tavs loan is due to run out next Tuesday and Abbott wants to keep the 19-year-old Premier League prospect for another month to cover the absence of regular right-back Frank Simek. Simek returned to Carlisle last Wednesday after spending two weeks back home in the USA as he recovers from a hip injury. He has just started his rehab programme and is on schedule for a return in mid-October. Abbott said: We want to keep James a bit longer and we hope to make progress on that this week. Pardew is likely to give Carlisle the thumbs-up to keep the 6ft 1in defender as the Magpies boss wants him to continue his development by gaining first-team experience with a League One club. The Bradford-born player has been on the fringes of the Newcastle first-team picture and is highly-regarded by Pardew. Any thoughts based on this news? CWL
