Driving along Saltwell road today I notice two new crossing places have been built.Whilst I agree that they are desperately needed was it really necessary to put the zebra crossing about eighteen feet from the mini roundabout and about six foot from a junction.During rush hour that particular roundabout is a nightmare in itself with traffic coming up from the team Valley as well as along Saltwell road and it looks like a recipie for disaster-then a short way along is another new crossing place-an island. After that bog all going down the road where the speed camera van likes to lurk until you reach the school and underpass crossing.I honestly believe that a worse place could not have been chosen.
Then again-you look at the chaos that has been made of the road systems in Central Gateshead and nothing seems surprising anymore!!!

the road system in most of Gateshead is stupid, the road planners dont have a clue and the road system proves it, there are a few places where traffic lights are needed but there are none, Gateshead council seem to think hey there are no traffic jams here during rush hour lets do something about it and put up some traffic lights, as for zebra crossing been put in stupid places there is one near where i live just off a busy junction, it's a case of it should be safe to cross here but it aint, ive seen a few close ones there, but this is Gateshead council were talking about, not the brightest bunch of people by a long mile, thinking is not one of there strong points.

Theres no logic to any of it.... When I was a young girl the school I went to was on Durham Road. The bus stop was situated directly opposite the school gate. And the crossing was way down the road so of course the kids tried to cross the road to get the bus. A fourteen year old girl from my sisters year was killed crossing at dinnertime and I know it was an horrific accident... And dont get me started into the four lanes trying to get into three when you come off the flyover or the trillion or so traffic lights in Gateshead-my blood runs cold thinking of when the school opens again and the kids try and use these crossings-coming off that mini-roundabout your going uphill and will be accelerating-only to have to come to a dead stop-then start and stop again-man I'd rather have seen lights half way down-but hey-thats encroaching on the speed camera vans territory

Can't comment on the Saltwell Rd situation as I don't know where this is. I can however comment on the Gateshead centre road works as I choir practice at St Joseph's church Hall. All I can say if a wanted to cock the town centre up and make it as awkward as possible for drivers. quite honestly I couldn't have done a better job. From someone like me who doesn't know their way around, it awful. Thank you for making my life hell.

Aye, quite agree with all the comments and if it's bad for "local" locals, a bit worse for "not quite" locals, think what it must be like for foreigners trying to negotiate their way round our sometimes manic road systems!

There is a crossing just off the roundabout by Tynemouth Pool. I question the sanity of whoever put it there!!! A crossing is needed, but they should have put it a couple of dozen yards further on!! You have to go like the clappers on the roundabout, then come to a screeching halt if anyone is on it, it's ridiculous!! I am convinced the people who do road layouts and things, don't drive themselves!!

i live in hope that one day someone will come along and use common sense when it comes to road planning, something GHD council have always been short of.

nothing to do with current road sytems in Gateshead but I used to Drive the 89 bus from Blaydon to Gateshead Station back in the 60's I remember the policeman in the white gloves who directed the traffic keeping me from getting out of the station for 45 minutes during rush hour and it was supposed to a half hour service, almost met myself coming back... nothing changes,
