Do you remember your first pint? When I was about 11 my stepdad gave me a drop of toon brew (Newcastle Brown) out of his glass and I got quite bolshy. But my first Pint was when I was 18, I went with a work pal Gordon who was about 22 to the Mayfair Dance, we met at Marlboro Crescent and he took me to the Durham Ox just opposite, we had a Black Velvet (sickly stuff) followed by a Rum and Pep (heartburn recipe). Whilst we were in the pub I was looking around and saw a group of about 8 women, I thought that was strange as the village I lived in no women were allowed in the bar without a man. anyway, they all had stickers on the bottom of their shoes and sitting cross legged with a foot up, some were marked 7/6 some at 5/- and the cheapest was 2/6, after downing the drinks and feeling very light headed I asked Gordon in a whisper that the whole pub could hear ' Have those women just had their shoes cobbled coz the prices are on the soles of the shoes' He grabbed me by the collar and ran me out of the pub, when we got along the road he said ' those women were prozzies, that is the price they are charging. How could I be so naive? I still am.

I remember both The Grapes and Downbeat. Used to frequent both along with Club a go go. Gino Washington and the Ram jam band were regularly there and used to be a highlight for me.
As for my first pint - 16 years old, Brandling Arms, Gosforth High St. Pint of Bass bitter - got rumbled half way through it and was thrown out. Money ( about 2 bob) down the drain! ;D
