Have to admit to following a story that involves this on Emmerdale and yes I can hear the howls of laughter at the revelation that I actually watch it But last week there was a programme that also covered the story and showed some-one actually being assisted in taking their own life. Now as far as Im concerned-should my quality of life deteriorate to the point that life was intolerable I would prefer the option to take this way out in a calm and dignified manner. I know this is a very controversial subject but well woth discussing I feel.

Yes, this is in the news a bit because of that TV programme....it was also discussed on "Question Time", BBC2. Like you say, a controversial subject and I think most people would prefer a dignified ending to their life if things got too bad. It seems in this country that it's been chewed over for quite some time and always from the MP's you get the same response which is that they agree with the above "but safeguards have to be put in place" if any law was passed. Nothing further then happens. No doubt it will come to the surface again......but in the meantime, nothing! I, myself, like you Shads would like to go quickly and easily but then you have to think of your family....how do they think? Thinking about this, a lot of animals just disappear into undergrowth or whatever and quietly expire....dignified. However we are not animals....or rather we are, but human animals, so, what do others think?

a lot of people are against assisted suicide but i suppose you have to experience the pain a person must be in to make such a decision, i think it should be allowed in this country as long as the person are sound of mind when they make the decision, if i ever get to the point where i start watching soaps for entertainment thats when id consider my life is at an end.

Oi sunshine!! Nothing wrong with Corrie and Eastenders ;D I'm in favour of it, people have a right to a say in their own end!! I get fed up of these people who seem to think that it will be a free for all!!!! It probably happens now anyway, I might be wrong, but I doubt that everyone who is very ill and dies, gets a post mortem.
People go on and on about palliative care, and how good it is, and yes, it might be, but if I was in agony, with no hope of recovery, then I'd want to go. And quite frankly it should be my choice, no one has the right to tell me how to live my life, why should they have that right at the end??

You'll will have heard this before but it so true, if we let our animals suffer like that we would quite rightly be called a cruel heartless bast'rd. So why can't we do the same favour of the one's we love? Euthanasia come from the Greek for mercy, that does say it all.

If some-one who is clearly in a great deal of physical discomfort and is terminally ill requests assistance to end their own suffering is that not a reasonable request?
I do find it strange that food and drink can be withdrawn and a person dies slowly but this is not allowed.

My father was in a hospice, surely that's all the proof anyone needs?
