Hi again, I believe it is fathers day soon. I wonder what folks think about this and other man made anniversaries such as mothers day and now grandmothers / grandfathers day (according to the cards in the shops) personaly I dont like them at all although I stand to get presents or cards from 2 of my 3 kids I would prefer the extra occasional visit or phone call from time to time Regards, Geordie

Aye, I think the same as you, Geordie....its just a money making thing for the card manufacturers etc. What about a special day for "I've got nobody and nobody loves me" type of person! A card for everyone! My son was born on Fathers Day and I was loaded with free gifts from the "baby" firms because of it....some of them were practical and of use so that wasn't too bad! Personally though I would rather they saved their money and, as you say, just turn up or a phone call. Usually its my daughter who buys the card/present and puts my son's name on them........that's women for you, eh? PS.....That last bit should get me some brownie points/stars from the women posters! ;D

I agree, they are just a waste of money!! I used to like the cards the kids made in school when they were little though But for the rest it's just a money making wheeze Have you seen the price of flowers in the run up to Valentines Day?? Not that Jazz would know the price of flowers like!!

All money making ventures now Im sure the kids will get Mr Shads a card but people seem to be going more and more overboard on these occasions-couldnt believe the amount of tat round Valentines and mothers day. When I was a kid my mam would get a lie-in,breakfast in bed,the tidying done and my sister and I would bake her a cake then pick a bunch of flowers for her from the Dene nearby-and that would be a very acceptable present from my own kids ;)We also made cards at school-and I used to love getting the hand-made cards from my children

Re my comments at the start of this thread. about not liking Fathers Day, my son was on route from Australia to Germany on work business. he diverted to England on Saturday and visited until Monday, also, he brought me a present! My eldest Daughter came from Hull to see me on Sunday, a trip of 40 miles to my house and she was supposed to work early turn that day but changed to night shift so she could come, she also brought a gift, My youngest daughter didnt even send a card, Now some thoughts are in my head, has my family been watching this thread (we are all from Tyneside) and got a guilt trip? or is it that maybe I was wrong about the whole thing and should keep my trap shut? I still dont like the idea of Fathers Day, but this year I was close to tears due to the thoughtfulness...... or do they know something I dont? have they been talking to my Doctor? or is Mrs geordie schemeing to get rid of me and they are in the plot?

A great Fathers Day then, Geordie.....I do remember when my Dad was alive sometimes forgetting the odd time and sometimes so many things were happening in my life that I was just too much wrapped up in myself/problems etc. As we grow older we have more time to think of these things......I had nothing/no contact/card from my son but daughter always remembers.....sometimes he remembers, sometimes he doesn't....that's just the way he is....I think he just doesn't think of these things....ah well!
