No-not our new member but the accent On the news tonight there was talk that the Geordie accent is spreading beyond the region its best known for-invading Middlesborough and even further afield.Becoming the accent representative of the Northern dialect. The rise in popularity is credited to Cheryl Cole Is this a good thing or not? And this is proving very popular too

No, its not, Shads, there are, as we all know, subtle differences in the Geordie accent.....bits of Sunderland creep into the South Shields lingo....South East Northumberland drifts into Whitley Bay speech. West Newcastle is different from the east and so and so on. It makes for a more interesting linguistic world and if I was say, from Middlesbrough, I would be offended to be classed as having the accent classified as being Geordie! Its like a lot of things now..... standardization, blandness....every town has a "mall" with the same shops in them etc. Lets not "water" down accents, dialects, words any more than we need to or why do we need to at all? Long live accents, long may they remain as they are! Rant over!

Totally agree Jazz. I really like the fact that there are so many regional accents. When we were young it was fascinating to travel down to Peterborough then onto Harwich and hear the accents change the further you travelled. I find the Northern accents very different-theres a very clear difference between say my accent and some-one from Middlesborough for example-and even London accents differ from North to south-or should that be sarf . Funnily enough I understand German very well but when our-at that time-Eastern relatives were visiting I could barely understand a word. The accent was totally different. I think it all makes the World a more interesting place
