Always remember as a youngster my mother putting a dab of butter (or was it margarine) on bumps and bruises. Can't remember if it helped at all.
Then there was rubbing dockleaves on nettle stings. Think that actually soothed the burning sensation.

We got goose grease rubbed on our chest's in winter, hated it as it smelt horrid

butter still works. I rubbed it on my granddaughters forhead and it stopped the swelling this morning, dont know why

can you still get kaolin potice? that seemed to work You can still get these............. Just for info Shads Kaolin Poultice offers a highly effective alternative to more intrusive treatments for a whole range of muscular strains, infected sores and wounds. That said I know them more from people that have horses. CWL

I used to get a dessert spoonful of cod liver oil every morning before my shredded wheat as a kid. Still use the same spoon now for my cereal and soup and, well anything that needs a spoon to shovel stuff in my mouth.....apart from stirring tea, coffee of course! ;D The cod liver oil was horrible, by the way....no wonder they put it into capsules now!

My mam use to give me asefeteda(sp) (she used to call it assyfeta) god knows what it was for It tasted foul Fairs, I still use dock leaves if I'm stung by nettles, works a treat, and you'll always find dock leaves growing by nettles Natures not daft mind!!
