Now that AV has been firmly rejected, I wonder will Councils such as Middleborough and North Tyneside now drop the AV system for electing Mayors. Seems strange that Ray Mallon got elected for a third term using the same system that was so soundly rejected

Yes that will be interesting to see what happens there! I'm surprised Ray Mallon got in, after his comments, but I don't know if he is a good mayor or not. If he is, then that is probably the reason. Roma could probably tell us what he's like.

I think they probably like his "no nonsense" independent approach to things.......everybody likes a maverick! But I don't live in Middlesbrough so I cannot really pass judgement.

AV was our chance to have a more representative say. Its not PR, which would have been better, but it was a step in the right direction. I think the Tory propoganda went a way to convincing people that AV was 'too complicated ' for them. How offensive was that? That should have been enough to vote for AV. I also think that the Lib dems should have used their bargaining tool of PR, instead of bending over and letting themselves be shafted for not even the highest bidder, but the lowest bidder. Sad day in politics as far as I am concerned.

It Clegg who is the reason for AV being rejected. no body trusts him, he hated even more that Gordon Brown latterly. AV was his baby, and it's the peoples payback for al the broken promises 'U' turns and surrendering all his principles for a seat and meaningless position in the cabinet. His career and his party are now none existant for many years to come. Hope he's happy.

Hi Milk. No- PR was his baby but he didnt stick with that and went for the watered down AV. He so could have used his co-operation with the tories to stick by the most fundemental part of LI Dems, but he sold his party down the river. I have losT any small respect I ever had for the LiB Dems. ShAME.

The No vote was for all intents and purposes twice that of the Yes vote. However for me the result simply confirmed it was far easier to decide in favour of keeping the staus quo than it ever was to demand change.................... One thing I do believe will happen is that as far as this country goes you may as well not bother voting if you believe in the middle ground or contesting the views of the two main political partys through the ballot box. There's also little point in attempting a protest vote as the Lib/Dems or other minority political factions have no chance of ever attaining sufficient numbers to actually make a difference or alter the balance of power. Hence voting in such a manner is probably a complete waste of effort or token gesture at best. Under an AV or better still PR system it would have had more chance of making a tangible difference. I agree with Bansh a sad day in politics indeed! Now I will have to watch how the Tory led coalition manages things until such time as the next General Election takes place. Before deciding whether to keep it Blue or give it back to the Red lot who left things in such a mess for them in the first place. CWL

Will the coalition last until the election??? I don't soley blame Labour for the problems though. It was hardly their fault that the banks failed, although it could be argued that Labour did not have tight enough regulation of the banks. I just think it's dammed convienient for the Tories to have a ready made whipping boy, because I think they'd do what they are doing even if we were financially stable. It's what Tories do - hammer those who can least afford it!

Should the coalition fold I would surmise either a minority Government will continue to exist (Tories hold power alone) or there will be another General Election. Very doubtful that the current situation will last for a full term though. If it does go a full term it will be interesting to see how much the Lib/Dems come back into things..................either with Clegg really coming to the fore in a Political sense by challenging Cameron more openly over issues or possibly by them choosing a new leader.
