Never heard of it nick Whats Clarkies? Surly you jest Shads.....Clark Chapmans were heavy engineers based i Gateshead They had 2 massive plants either side of the felling by-pass one was knocked down some years ago that was the biggest of the 2 it was sandwiched between the by-pass and Gateshead and stretched down to the Old Fold the other plant which is the one that has been taken over is at the back of the council depot....You must of seen the cranes they made for oil rigs sticking up all over the place

my grandad used to work for Clark Chapmans it was him who designed the legs for the oil rigs, during the war he was not allowed to say what they were making and even after the war never told anyone what they made during that time he took that secret to his grave, i done a short spell there working in the offices on an Apple MKII computer near the end of my YTS.

No-unfortunately I wasnt joking nick I probably did see the cranes but in the past there were so many crane-like structures what with the ship building and all that it just didnt register as being part of a particular firm. I do miss those cranes round where Swan hunter used to be-was so much part of skyline when I was growing up and going to the coast-but we tended to go North of the river so didnt see so much on the South side

When the plant was there it was enormous....Thats probably why i assumed everyone had heard of it.
