Wouldn't it be better and easier in some respects for fines to be calculated on a percentage based on income.
For example two people get caught speeding. Both on the A1 both doing 90 both are given £600 fines. However, one is a premier league footballer on £90,000 a week whereas the other is an average Joe on £200 a week. One of them actually works hard for his money and finds he has to pay 3 weeks wages to cover the fine if he doesn't pay with in a set amount of time they'll put the fine up (I wonder who's getting £500,000 a year to think up that piece of intelligent thinking) and if he still fails to pay he'll be jailed. The footballer on the other hand realises that for one day that week he won't be able to buy his bottles of champagne for his cornflakes.
Not only would giving fines worked out by percentage be a more fair option it would also make the government more money and we know how they like to make money.
I believe a few countries already do this I can't off the top of my head remember who they are although it seems in this country we need to be the first to do it or it doesn't get done because we don't copy other countries.....unless it's America.
Thoughts?

Hi maui-good to see you on here Now this is something I completely agree with you on.For years I've felt it plain daft that some people can speed at god knows what speed knowing that the fine is barely gonna touch them and Ive never understood how a fine that may be high to me but pennies to them is gonna act as any sort of deterrent. When I think about it a percentage of earnings or income would seem a fairer way of doing things. And dont mention America lol-special relationship my a--e

Quite agree!! It's ridiculous that Prem football players and the like, get away with paying what is, for them the equivalent of pocket change!! Won't happen though, Cameron is not known for making those who can afford it most, pay more!!! That will become more and more evident as the cuts start to bite!!

yes definetly fines need to be a proportional representation of a person's earnings. otherwise it is meaningless. Also the whole justice system needs to be looked at. Justice is never really the true equal scales of justice it is portrayed to be. How often do we see women getting longer terms, or more likely to get a custodial sentence than men? How often do we see high profile cases getting longer terms than other similar cases that are not in the public knowledge? Justice is not a fair equal solution to crime. Its just political, and convenient for the times.

You shouldn't get fined for speeding anyway! If the object of the excersize is to stop speeding, then points on the license would be far more of a deterrent anyway! It's just another revenue raising ruse!!!

What is it with you and speed skint? I'm much more concerned about bad driving than speed!!! I'm not talking 120mph here, but a couple of miles over the limit!! I nearly went into some idiot on Friday, that had sod all to do with speed!!! Just coming up to the lights by Christ Church in Shields, and the lanes separate into 2, one to turn left and one to carry on, or turn right. The plonker in front decided he was in the wrong lane and just pulled across, without checking if anything was coming behind!! And I think he thought the indicator was an optional extra!!! I'm much more concerned with idiots like that, than someone going 35 in a 30 zone!!!

speeding is not exempt from the list of bad driving habits, just because a road is quiet does not mean someone can put their foot down, speed limits are set because that is the safest maximum speed for that roads conditions, like ive always said if people stuck to driving the way they were taught there would not be so many lamp posts and trees with flowers tied to them.
