Recent proposal that top flight grounds should have a section of only standing fans....Like in the old days...Pre- Hillsborough.... I wonder what everyone think about it? At first I thought it was a brilliant idea...to start on a small scale and then maybe get back to as many of you old fogies will describe as the good old days of terraces and all....Maybe a young magpie like me would have got to experience what it was like.....But then I thought of those 96 fans who tragically died at Hillsborough....Do we want to repeat our mistakes again? I think not. On second thought I think all seater stadiums are better. If anyone wants the standing and singing experience there's always the away games to go to.....Though this too can be risky as we recently saw a Cardiff fan fall from the upper tier to down below at Millwall. It's never safe at all. But at least all seater stadiums minimize the risk. Please all of you share your views and opinions.

The main thing about the terraces was that you were with all of your mates in one place............................ Now with all seater stadiums and season tickets that's far harder to do. I prefer the grounds as they are now and although not against standing areas don't think they serve much purpose. Large numbers of people stand up anyway when things get exciting or a goal is scored. I'm also hardly likely to take a child into one of those standing areas to savour the atmosphere as the risk of something happening probably negates any positives for me. Those in favour are possibly looking at this matter through Rosies Specs I think. At away matches I imagine it would be even worse. There were a lot of unsavoury characters who hid among large groups of fans standing on the terraces. Not sure I want to go back to that either. CWL

Besides with seater stadiums we can have women and children come in and watch the games safely. I remember a woman come in with her young son (7-8 years old) sit beside me at one game. That's what we want.

If it's too disturbing to recount I understand. In the 70's and 80's at some away grounds you could not wear a scarf nevermind a shirt as they do now. In fact it was sufficient for you to open your mouth and speak differently to set off a fight. One particualr game at Old Trafford I was threatened with a knife and told effectively to F off out of the ground before the guy did me...................This was in one of the main stands by the way! Fortunately there were sufficient other lads with me it didn't turn really nasty. Within reason you could at that time go into a number of different areas of grounds simply by paying at the turnstyle on the day. Although you would have to have been completely mental to go in what was regarded as the home end at some of the big Clubs or where you knew they had a hard core hooligan element. Mind you I knew lads who did....................Hard as nails miners, squaddies home on leave, welders and a few other trades from in the shipyards, local foundrys and railways all who could handle themselves. I went to games for the football, but plenty went for a totally different reason. CWL

CWL you had to be brave and travel in groups I gather. God...football didn't have to be so terrifying. Tell you what I'd have done....Always gone in groups with my best mates and purposely worn the shirts and made as much noise as possible By the way it still exists today. One guy I know on facebook who goes to every away game was threatened at Wolves and Birmingham. He's hoping for better luck at Aston Villa. One other time he admits it was his fault at West Brom when he stormed into the home fans pub and declared we would beat them. He was drunk ....Safe to say he hates the midlands

A little by the by but here's an episode reported in today's Norwegian Dagbladet. A party of Norwegian Manure supporters attended yesterday's games between West Ham and Manure. Nothing special there since there are many Manure fans across here ( I always put it down to them not knowing any better ) These fans were by some administrative error placed amongst WHU fans. Still nothing special, you may say but when you add the fact that included in the party were 35 child cancer sufferers from the age of 6 upwards then the story takes on a completely new tilt. Trouble started when the WHU fans noticed there was no jubilation from these youngsters when the home team went 2-0 up. (they had on good advice hidden their colours). The home supporters started hurling abuse and threats at the terrified kids. A closer look would have told anyone that these kids were not in the best of health. >:(Only action, if somewhat delayed from a concerned steward prevented a major incident. I find this disgraceful and whilst I have no sympathy for Manchester U supporters I know only too well how unpleasant WHU fans can be. I remember only too well being chased many years back by a violent mob from the ground to our buses whilst the police stood there laughing. Fortunately all these kids came away unscathed and with the last laugh result wise.

This story has left me fuming. The West Ham fans should be ashamed of themselves.
And for once I am glad Man Utd won.

Three points about the incident you have supplied details of Fairsy.......... First off, how sad I am as a football supporter that it happened at all. Secondly thank god we do have all seater stadiums as had that been terraces who knows what would have happened. Mind you those kids would probably not have been there full stop! Thirdly, at last a steward with enough common sense and balls to act as they did. They deserve some recognition for intervening in such a positive fashion. CWL
