What a laugh Shads - if the bride's family had to pay for it, it would be a normal wedding. That would have been different don't you think? Perhaps it would have been beneath the Queen to attend such a common event.

Collectables in the Metro Centre has a load of stuff with their grinning faces on it, the print looks cheap and nasty like something you would get in poundland which is where they will probably end up, even ASDA are doing souvenir stuff thoguh mainly books and magazines at the moment, wonder what we will have next, Royal Wedding the video game, can you get Wills to the church on time while collecting the gold wedding rings .

Skint - just reminded me - we can get copies of the engagement ring. You know - originally Diana's engagement ring - but now Kate's.

There was a bit on the BBC news this morning about street parties. Apparently the government have told the local authorities to ease off and not spoil the celebrations with PC and health & safety ....We were going to have a street party as we live in a small cul-de-sac but when we found out that the council had to approve it suitable and then apply for permits and good knows what else we knocked it on the head. We have told all the neighbors kids to just come to ours instead

I remember the 1953 Coronation street party that we had.....it was a long street too.....60 houses. Everybody seemed to be involved in one way or another....people baking cakes, making sandwiches etc....tea pots all over the place! It was held at the mid way point of the street which widened there. There was red, white and blue everywhere with Union Jacks flying on every house....no, or not many, England St. Georges flags in evidence from what I can remember. The kids had a fancy dress party and I reluctantly went as a clown....the white faced variety....just as well that, because I would have been as red as a beetroot! My two elder sisters and "me Mam" had made the costume and probably didn't understand my embarrassment! They, of course, were different times......no cynicism, no health and safety, not many TV's, not much money even though, as a child, that didn't concern me. I didn't win the fancy dress competition and probably couldn't wait to get out of the damn thing! One thing that was in evidence then was the lack of "public" drinking.....it was all tea, tea and more tea....lemonade for the kids, no Coke, Fanta, Tango, etc etc!

i remember the queens silver jubilee, all the people in our area paid a small ammount each week for about a year leading up to the jubille, a marquee was hired and it was held on the sports field next to the fountain view centre Bensham gateshead, plenty of food and games organised and the Mayor came for a visit, i dont think we will see anything like the celebrations of the past, with everything thats gone on with the royal family and all the divorces i think most people have lost their respect for them and dont care anymore, plus like a lot of people are saying this Royal wedding is just turning into a money making opportunity.

I think you are right there skint. There werent any celebrations that I can remember for any royal event round where I lived to be honest so I dont have any fond memories.Just remember getting the silver coin at school for the Jubilee and also being lined up on Durham Road (you remember that one ) to wave a flag at a car whizzing past during the queens visit Ive not heard of anything being arranged here either-just a special school lunch on Thursday where the kids get pizza, sausage rolls etc at dinner time at the Primary School.

Aren't the Royal family small....I've "stumbled" across the Queen & Prince Charles and was amazed to see how little they were. I've met the Duke of Edinburgh when he came to where I was working and he had a drop hanging off the end of his nose during the whole visit! ;D ;D ;D ;D
