This morning I phoned the dog wardens to report 2 dogs running amok on the est one was a nasty little staff and the other a alsatian rottweiler cross . They refused to come out as it was not their job to tour the streets searching for dogs ! However if the dogs were tethered the would be stright out what a joke

Aye, nick, what are they there for? A few months back we had an incident here...looking out the front window we saw 2 staffies having a go at each other even though a man had one of them on a lead. He was getting a bit desperate so we went out to see if we could help....fortunately one of our neighbours managed to tie the loose one on to a post. About two hours later along comes the warden!

About six years back we had something that looked like a Pitbull wander through our front door and attack our collie in the kitchen-kids had left the front door open whilst they were playing out.It took me nearly fifteen minutes to get it to open its mouth as it had clamped its teeth on our dogs neck-absolute hell.Tried hitting it,punching it even kicking it but it wouldnt let go-eventually got it out the house and a neighbour had to chase it out the garden holding a chair in front of him.I reported it to the warden but nothing was done. Saw it a few days later and to be honest I was terrified.I called the police the second time and they did actually come out altho by then the dog was gone. What got me was just before that a neighbour had had to go down the pound to collect his pet dog-he'd let it out on the hill opposite to do its business-old lurcher it was-and the wardens had picked it up and taken it away-I think he had to pay something like sixty quid to secure its release. Harmless dog taken away-bloody dangerous dog left wandering

I can ever understand the mentality of people who own dangerous dogs like Pitbulls etc. In these days of health and safety I also can't understand who such dogs can be kept legally.

I find it interesting that some of the responsibility for this situation being expressed here appears to rest more with the animals rather than their owners! CWL

My concern was the fact that there were 2 dogs running around together which would bring out their pack instincts I live in an area that has a lot of young children and dread the thought what could of happened. I posted a similar storey on the old EC last year There is no reason why anyone should keep a large dog unless its a working dog....Outlaw them all

I would fully agree that responsibility for a dog should rest firmly with the owner CWL.But the problem with our situation was that there was no owner that I knew of to take any responsibility.Clearly the dog-or bitch in this case-had some sort of owner altho judging by the scarring on its head it had clearly been used as some sort of fighting dog-it was covered in them. The thing was-that animal was running round a street full of kids playing out and it was extremely dangerous and should have been captured and contained if at all possible. We never did find out who owned her

Well i have found out where the dogs came from and to be honest Im shocked. Late last night i popped out for a smoke and one of my nighbours (2 Doors away) came out to do the same we stood talking for a few mins then all of a sudden from her back door came this monster of a dog bounding down the path snarling and barking .Turns out the dogs are her sisters and my neighbor was looking after them I told her she was lucky to have them back in the house as i had called the police earlier she asked me why and when i explained i got a mouthful .....ignorant cow

People are funny when it comes to dogs. You get some who just cant seem to grasp the fact that dogs do need to be kept under control and that an out of control dog can be very threatening and frightening. My nephew was petrified of dogs for years after some woman let her dog jump up at him when he was very young in the park. About two years back we got hauled up to Wrekenton housing office as some-one had complained that we allowed our dogs to roam free.It was utter rubbish.I'd spent over three hundred quid to put a five foot fence up to keep the dogs in and the younger collie-altho great with our kids is a bit flighty round other kids so I am extremely cautious with her.And yet Ive seen many a dog-belonging to longer term tenants let out in the morning to do their business-theres this annoying sausage dog that stands there yapping every morning and not a word is said
