Shads the thing is it's only a check....................I have had people volunteer a lot more than what is sometimes disclosed by this route. I would personally take it as part of the whole recruitment process, but never the be all or end all of appointing someone. CWL

There must be many job were a clear CRB check is a prerequisite. Who now decides the new criteria, and with whom does the final decision lie.

I believe you are wrong there......................it's the check which is a prerequisite of many roles not whether it comes up clear. If that were the case under employment law people would be up in arms over unfair treatment and being discriminated against for petty stuff or possibly offences that happened years ago. The fact they still appear on a database will or may have no bearing on their ability to perform a given role. How any guidelines are used is down to an employer. However again under employment law those same employers have to be able to prove it has been applied fairly should it be challenged. CWL

Sounds to me CRB checks cause more problems than they solve.
Is that me agreeing with Cameron? Wash my mouth out with soap and water.

Just as well they are getting rid of them - can you imagine how long it would take to CBR all the volunteers that are going to jump to help Cameron with his "Big Society"!!

I cannot abide that dreadful soundbite "The Big Society".And thats probably why they are looking at getting rid of CRB checks-so we can all volunteer and work for nowt Whats with this "big" business anyway? My son has to do a flippin "big write" every Friday afternoon(and which idiot decided that was a good time for primary kids to do masses of writing anyway ) They do the "big sing" at the Sage each year. Last year they did the "big walk". Big society Big bloody joke if you ask me

Agree with all the above comments...Shadow, CWL. What happened to people just being people, helping when they can, doing as best they can, when they can. It seems that the Government is forever trying to impose these crackpot ideas on us. I think, generally that, apart from the vague, "ill thought out" idea of "The Big Society" it has an unsettling effect on people and starts to make us feel guilty......are we doing enough etc. I'm sure, in the future, we will all be inserted with a programming "chip" controlled by the Government. "The Big Chip"! Let the people decide what the people do!
