Asda have been told they cant open the Netto in Birtley as an Asda store because it's too close to the one in Washington, until they find a buyer they must keep it open as a Netto, i find it quite stupid as the people in birtley were happy Asda had took it over, the office of fair trading should listen to what the people of Birtley want and they want an Asda, so who can take it over, well all of these have stores even closer to Birtley Netto than Asda do, Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsbury, Co op, Lidl, it was going to close until Asda bought out Netto so who the hell is going to buy it, the office of fair trading should look at Whitley bay 2 huge Morrison stores within quarter of a mile of each other.

Aye, the one in Whitley Bay was a Safeway until Morrisons bought them out. The one in Tynemouth has always been a Morrisons. They're not very far from each other though.

Skint-was it really gonna close?
I hadnt heard about that.I use that Netto a canny bit.Used to pop into the safeway/Morrisons shop on the opposite side too until that shut.Everytime I go to Birtley it looks like more places have gone.
I dont mind Asda but I do have a problem with American Companies slowly taking things over, isnt Asda actually now owned by Walmart or Kmart?Something like that.
I think Netto had a place in Birtley and I wonder why Asda didnt go for the vacant supermarket site opposite giving Birtley shoppers a bit of choice.

according to what ive heard Netto in Birtley was going to close until Asda bought the Netto chain, Asda is part of the Walmart group the two merged years ago, not 100% sure how much of it Walmart own now, my sons not too sure either but said he can get 10% off at Walmart if he goes to America .

[quote author I think Netto had a place in Birtley and I wonder why Asda didnt go for the vacant supermarket site opposite giving Birtley shoppers a bit of choice.[/quote] The reason Asda didnt take over the bigger vacant store opp is they are concentrating on a new concept much like Tescos Metro which are only small. What i find strange is a super mkt closes and another wants to step in and fill the void and they are refused permission

It's strange Nick, last year (October) A new Netto opened around 500 yards away from the 24 hour Asda in Gosfprth. Who said they can't is it the council?

As far as im aware it is the council who has the final say Asda might aswell just run it as a Netto and show the council what total numpties they realy are. Anyone know which council runs Birtley is it Gateshead or Chester-le-Street....my money is on Gateshead

I'm pretty certain its Gateshead nick.Years back when we were trying to get transferred off our old Estate,Elizabethville in Birtley was one of the options Gateshead Council gave us.
