These seem to have died out a little these days I was thinking back to the things I used to do as a kid-some were the usuals like horse-riding and swimming but a couple of crazes ran through our school between the ages of 11-14. One was stamp collecting.Loads of kids-myself included got interested in this. And I can remember sending off for collections of stamps "on approval" ;)I had a pretty canny collection-including some penny reds and first day covers-my dad sent me the one for Ann and Marks wedding as a present.Unfortunately we lost it in the fire but I still remember my favorites Other craze was train-spotting.We all rushed off to buy the books with lists of engine numbers and spent hours hanging over the bridge at the bottom of Chowdene Bank hoping to see the Deltics pass by. I sometimes see a couple of people on another bridge these days but once the High Speed Trains lost their novelty value the craze seemed to die too

Yes, I agree with you that hobbies seem to be partially on their way out. Like you I was into stamp collecting & remember getting those stamps "on approval"....a strange term that you don't hear nowadays! I remember rooting through them & going to the library to borrow Stanley Gibbons stamp catalogue to see if any of my stamps were valuable. Two of my stamps had some value & I have them in my mind now, one from Argentina with Eva Peron's face on it & a Russian one depicting some aspect of the revolution....the Argentina one was worth 17/6....a fortune to me then! That would be around 78p now, I think? I've still got my 2 stamp albums somewhere, a "good" one & a "not so good one". When I left school I worked for a small ship brokers on Ncle. quayside & I remember taking the empty envelopes with foreign stamps on them home so I had a collection of postmarked stamps on envelopes as well! Stamp collecting does give you the edge over other people when answering questions about currencies, capital cities, colonies etc on TV quizzes though! My other big hobby was, "hold you're breath", pond life....I loved anything to do with ponds, frogs, newts, beetles, worms, snails, fish, even leeches! I even constructed a "pond drag" which was a thing on the end of a piece of string that you threw into a pond which scraped the mud, collecting all sorts of stuff from the bottom! I was also into bird watching & nature in general. I went through the usual childhood phases of cigarette cards, bubble gum cards etc & wish I had them now (they might be worth something!)....how mercenary! ;D

Hmmmmm, Pond life? There is a joke in there somewhere!!!! ;D Anyone remember the "I Spy" books? I had one for birds, and used to take it with me everywhere! We lived in a rural place, so it was great!! I also collected stamps, and still have my album. I've also got quite a few first day covers - all the Royal weddings (now divorced : they might be worth something to my great x2 grandchildren!!!! Stamps won't be very exciting these days - they are all flamin' Euros!!!! Apart from special ones, other countries' stamps always seem nicer than ours and more colorfull!!!

Howls of outrage from our female members.....hobby, hobby, what what!!!!! ;D

I like angling, although there are places that you can drive right up to the waters edge, now I've got arthritic hand it's difficult. There was a chap in the angling club in Rochdale with only one arm so if he was able do it so, so should I. I never collected stamps because philately will get you nowhere.

He prefers to be called Philip ;D
I do know Mike Harding, me and my ex brother in law Doug. jammed with him at a party at Mikes house in Crumpsell Manchester. Doug used to play keyboards for Bernard Wrigley when he was touring.
