I took a trip with a friend to the Farne Islands a few years back.We landed on Inner Farne and the Terns were bloody lethal in defence of their nests.I wasnt inspired by the sight of the visitors before us rejoining the boat-one woman with a bleeding head wound after one of the blighters pecked her. Altho seeing all the different seabirds was fantastic most of the trip was spent ducking when you saw the dreaded shadow-no not me lol-of a tern on the ground in front of you meaning one was closing in fast. The Arctic Terns were by far the worst-nothing seemed to scare 'em off Aye, I know what you mean, Shads. I had two spells working on the Farnes & we used to carry sticks above our head for the Terns to ward them off. Also the noise of the birds in the breeding season is something else...Kittiwakes, Terns & Gulls being the noisiest. The sound of Eider Ducks, however are quite soothing & restful....a kind of soft whirring sound...on my afternoons in bed you could hear them outside & they lulled you off to sleep. In misty, drizzly weather the seals used to start a mournful howling....the local fishermen used them to locate their position round the islands as they always tend to congregate in numbers at certain parts of the islands.

It is an amazing experience. We took the kids on the boat trip about two years back altho we didnt actually land that time.Sea was well rough but the sight of the birds on the cliffs was fabulous-have a soft spot for the Puffins but the Cormorants and shags were stunning too.We were also lucky enough to see some seals-first time Ive ever seen them in the wild-I'd recommend it to anyone despite the terns

Those puffin pics are fantastic Rosy!! Did you use a zoom lens, if not, how on earth did you get so close to them?? The second photo looks like he is conducting and orchestra! ;D

Thanks for comments. I've got long zoom lenses, but there are plenty of photo opportunities without them. Here's a couple that were really close. The tern was attacking someone just in front of me.

Rosy, these are terrific photos....I didn't comment on them because I thought they were taken from some professional photographer's website! I'm sure they're good enough to win a wildlife photography competition!
