What annoys me is that when I was at Primary school there was a boy in my class who would come in with rips in his shoes, barely anything in his packed lunch and his mam would pick him up with a can of fosters in her hand. Not one thing ever happened to protect him. Yet when my mam asked to take me on holiday for a week I was asked "Is everything okay at home?" and now it's smoking in cars.
I'm in favor of protecting children but only children who need protecting instead of mindless laws. There's so many kids I've came in contact with who are obviously suffering from abuse and not one person ever suspected anything despite it being obvious. At a time when poor children often slip through the net and are ignored by social services, is this really the time to bring in MORE legislation. We need to sort out the mess child protection is in already instead of adding more things to police.

Yes would agree that we need to sort out the child protection mess that we are in. They act too soon in taking kids away from their parents in some cases and not soon enough in others. I agree. But that is social services. the smoking in cars with kids thing would be a separate issue of a crime in itself.

There was a bigger majority than I thought there would be, but when I think about it...Everyone who doesn't smoke naturally supported the ban. What surprised me was the number of smokers who said they would never smoke in a car when there was a child in it, maybe smokers are becoming less selfish? Of course there are people who played the personal freedom card.
It's an erroneous argument, as smoking in a car is not only bad for the child, but also any other adults in the car.
Before anyone asks, my car has the lowest emissions in it's class. Due to a turbo diesel six speed sequential auto gear box has one of the best MPG.

Milky - I have never smoked while driving (not a multi-tasker). Never smoke in my own home when we have our grandson around, or (little sarcasm here), friends who have given up that filthy habit and are now a little better than us. (where are the "smilies") - okay, have to say "just joking". We smokers, generally, are considerate of others.

Hi nickk this law only applies when there is a person under 18 in the car and it is the smoker who is fined, it is against the law to sell someone under 18 cigarettes but anyone over 16 can smoke, so lets say a 17 year old is driving his car and smoking, do the police fine him for smoking with himself in the car, another scenario a group of young adults over 16 under 18 in a car all smoking 1 adult over 18 not smoking, would that over 18 adult be fined if they were also smoking, we may see a few discrimination cases over this. Well they do say the law is an ass this law confirms that, as you can legally smoke at 16 they should apply this law only when someone under 16 is in the car, better still ban smoking in cars all together. At the end of the day we all know what will happen, they will stop a load of people for the first few months and a few will get fined, slowly this will die off and then just like the law about driving while using a mobile phone the police will no longer give a toss, plus in this time when we are facing terrorist threats they are planning on cutting the Police force by 11000, these cuts are due around November, hey just in time for Christmas, you might as well smoke, drink and use you're mobile phone while driving around a bunch of crazy Muslims with missiles strapped to their asses, the chances of getting stopped are practically zero.

Just proves what everyone knows......smokers are selfish to the extreme, and don't care who they cause damage (people who they purport to love, and would do anything for) to pursue of their filthy, dangerous and additive habit.
Smoking in a car carrying children is child abuse, and people doing so should be sentenced accordingly.
