I attended the Europa game against FC Anji Makhachkala last night with lucky mascot my grandson (7), his first European game at St James Park.
It was almost a typical cold miserable night in the North East for a game of football, but 45,000 braved the elements hoping to roar The Mags to victory.
If the dying seconds of Stoke were enough to give you a heart attack last night took the prize when it comes to why football is such a great game to watch. The free kick that crashed off the bar and somehow Elliott kept the rebound out. The red card which also turned the tide. Then with everything pointing to a half hour of extra time only for that final cross from Marveaux and Cisse planting the header home. The place went up and the noise was incredible, don't think anyone even heard the final whistle. Not sure who had the bigger grin me or the bairn. Been to some great Euro nights at The Toon, but that one is another night for those there which will be remembered for a long time. Not necessarily for the quality of football, but the belief it ain't over until the final whistle is blown.
You just got to love those Football Gods and their sense of timing.
