Job half done............ it's how the team deliver the hard part of scoring at home which will determine any further progress. I would have taken a draw before kick off so okay with tonight's performance although one all may have been better. Thought Perchino was outstanding in defence with the rest of the back four and keeper all doing a solid job as well. Considering all bar Mapou are effectively squad players and haven't played much together as a unit APee can't have any complaints. Anita also impressed me tonight as he has been know to flag towards the end of games, but looked very fit and I was surprised when he was taken off. As for Forest well the thread title sums his performance up and that's without a FFS thrown in for good measure. WL

just finished watching the replay.........Benny could have won it with that chip shot.............that said was pleased to see Oberdone has dropped step overs from his repertoire...........not pleased he has replaced it with giving the ball away even more than usual. I counted 5 times in the first half alone...............

We went there not to lose and we didn't. Mission accomplished.
The back four were very solid yesterday. Perch and Y-M made life very difficult for Eto'o and Traore and it's nice to see that Pardew can pick other centre backs over Williamson now. Was very impressed by Haidara again too. Hopefully he can adapt to the league quickly so that he will become our regular left back. I'd move up Santon to the midfield, I feel he'd be more useful there.
Obertan was a good player in Bordeaux, which is why Ferguson brought him. Only Whiskey nose also saw that he would never make it at this level. Gave away the ball far too carelessly as usual. He should go back to France in the summer. This league is too fast and too physical for him.
Another one who won't cut it I think is Marveaux. Sure, he is a good footballer but he is also struggling with the tempo, always having to touch the ball a few too many times before he will release it. He can't really cope with the physical part eather, being muscled off the ball far too easily.
A shame Ben Arfa didn't score too, but he has a lot to come back to.

They melted Obertan down at the glue factory, but nothing would stick to him...not even a football..........Is this guy good for anything?

Natt that's a good assessment of specific players based on last nights showing. Totally agree that Forest and Marveaux are just not up to the quality required at this level to make a difference. Unlike Anita their chances of making the team are getting worse with each time they do play. For a while I did think Anita may go the same way, however he appears to be adjusting to the demands at this level. One thing for sure he reads the game a whole lot better than Mr T. What did you make of Anzhi? I expected much more from them than what I saw and got the impression they expected The Toon not to put up much resistance last night. Which of course was entirely wrong. Their recent big money signing Willian certainly didn't like the idea of mixing it with our defence, going off after 25 minutes. Should be interesting to see if he plays the second leg. His replacement Traore is possibly one of those that when red hot is a handful, but when having an off day is a complete waste of a place. Samuel Eto'o is the man they do look too for something special. He is still capable, but perhaps at 31 showing he is no longer quite the exceptional player he used to be Barca and Inter. With a decent crowd behind The Mags it could be an eventful night come next Thursday for the return leg. WL

Agreed with you both. Don't think Willian had the stomach to even play. That wasn't much of a challege in the corner that he came up lame on. Whether he didn't fancy the cold weather er what I think he just begged off. Happy with the result if we can fill SJP next week will make it even more difficult for them and the match won't be on that artifical nonsense. I'm thinkin we can move on in this one. ;D

With a decent crowd behind The Mags it could be an eventful night come next Thursday for the return leg. Anita is adjusting and he is a very good player. I think he is too light weight to take over Tioté's role. Problem is I don't think Pardew really knows how or where he should use him. Having been one of our best players when he played it must have been a bad blow to be put on the bench anyway. Can't Pardew guarantee him a place in the future, I think he might start looking for other clubs in the summer. Anzhi were really talked up before the game. Having an impressive run and all. They looked very tame though. We'll see how they will play next game. When you play against a team lead by Guus Hiddink you should never take anything for granted. Don't think Willian left the pitch out of fear for our defenders. I think it might have been the pitch itself causing his injury. A few teams in Sweden use the same surface and players here have been complaining about how easy it is to twist your knees on it. Might have been that he was unlucky during the fall... or he just didn't like the cold much. Now I've played on plastic myself at least four times in my life and I didn't notice that a big difference from it.
