Not only can he get past a player with the ball. But he also looks for through passes from the back line. He can probably set up a few goals in that way as many won't expect those kind of passes from a centre back.

As there was no specific thread to cover the Potters game thought I would stick my views in here seeing as we got the three points. Got to be honest and say the best thing about today for me, other than taking the points, was the pre and post match training... As for the game, well not sure what it may have looked like on TV, but inside the ground for the most part it was desperate stuff. That may appear harsh and MOTD may prove me wrong, however I seriously doubt it. There's just something about Stoke that makes me wonder what on earth do their supporters actually consider is football. Yes they can pass it around, are well organised, very physical and even capable of occasionally a bit of creativity, but for the most part it's shite! Unfortunately today far too many of our players got dragged into the same mentality and it was poor. The first half about as forgetful as it can be barring just about the only good chance I recall of us scoring falling to Gouffran, and yeah he missed! The second half started much as the first had ended... Stoke working hard with their two lines of four and only real creative outlet in Shotton on the right giving Santon a torrid time. Meanwhile Cabaye was having a real off day... and possibly feeling his legs after the trip to Moscow last Thursday. Fortunately Sissoko decided he would take up the challenge to be the driving force, constantly surging forward on the break trying to make something happen. Yet for all that my biggest frustration was the number of high balls played into the area that Asmir Begovic simply caught without any trouble what so ever. I reckon he probably has more problems during training with his team mates than what Newcastle caused him today in that respect. There's been some discussion about superstition (not the Stevie Wonder song) on here over the past few days and one or two poo pooing the idea. That's fair enough, however as someone who has experienced perhaps a bit more Toon heartache than most take it from me you annoy the Football Gods at your peril. So with the game entering the last quarter and looking every bit a dull 0 - 0 draw we get the first signs this could be going to get a lot worse. First off a decent shout for a penalty at the Gallowgate end as Sissoko goes down in the box after an attempted shot on target. Plenty of noise from that end of the ground, but nothing doing from referee Andre Marriner. Shortly after the ball comes down towards the Leazes End where Mr T takes out Walters in similar fashion and yes you guessed it the ref gives the spot kick. I could almost hear the flurry of FFS's being said in a downtown bar in Philli... Walters duly dispatching the kick to make it one nil to Pulis spoilers. Considering the amount of possession The Toon had up to that point it was a kick in the teeth to say the least. Yet those same Football Gods which we fear also appear to be taking a shine to this current set of Mags. None more so that Yohan Cabaye who I have to be honest was not having one of his better games. Sissoko it was who went on another of those surging runs of his going past opponents like they weren't there. Only to be stopped right on the edge of the box when many other officials may have pointed to the spot. The farce before the kick was taken had to be seen to be believed.... at times I wonder just what is going on inside Saylors head. Not that it mattered much as Yohan hit another one of his trademark freekicks past Begovic to make it one all. The relief was tangible among the home support although the expected push for a winner less forthcoming. However that's where I come back to those Football Gods again and keeping on the good side of them. It's okay to hurl abuse at ex Mackems like Jones and Whitehead, but not at one who has worn the shirt for us. Not that there was any danger of Mercenary Micky showing his face. He never warmed up at half time with the others and the bench itself probably had more chance of coming on for a cameo role. Now I have no idea what Stoke City fans have done this week to get on the wrong side of the FG, but two minutes into added time I was delighted they had. Marveaux slotting the ball through to Cisse who miracle of miracles was actually for once on side and smashed the ball home for the winner. Que eruption of noise, massive relief and pure joy all round.... well other than on the Stoke City Bench and Pulis stalking his technical area. Can't say we deserved to win, but who cares... Now I wonder what the reaction was like in that downtown bar in Philli when Papiss scored! WL

Spot on match report as always WL!! Was at work fer this one, had to make do with the live commentary on TalkS**** Anyway, managed te finish in time to watch the match late on ( caught from around 35 min mark so missed the first pen shout). Not a great performance fer all the possession and huffing & puffing, but I do think we deserved the win and the 3 points ;D Think we still need to do a lot of work on our set piece play........how many sodding corners, crosses.....straight at the 'keeper.......FFS ;D ;D

TYVM WL - fine report and I'm glad for the 3 points.
Saylor had a great game but his antics during the set piece made him look a proper idiot.
Agee Desert Fox - Too many corners wasted.
