Southampton under their new manager will be coming to have a right old go at The Toon today so it may not be quite as hoped for... If offered I would take 1 - 0 now. One thing for sure Cisse must start burying some of the gilt edged chances he is being provided by his colleagues otherwise an upset could be on the cards. No raising of expectations just do the bloody job and earn the points to ease the pressure from those below us. Should a win take us above the unwashed then all the better.... WL

Today was one of mixed emotions as I had been informed before the game about someone I knew having died yesterday. Still awaiting full details, but as often the case the news came as an unexpected shock to say the least. Bill would have appreciated the game today although being a die hard Boro supporter his views as usual probably along the lines of how lucky The Toon were etc. etc. etc. That said he would have enjoyed watching two players who I thought stood out from the rest in Black & White, namely Sissoko and Gouffran. These two don't just work their socks off for the cause they're smart with it... Mind you visitors Southampton had a very good go at spoiling the French Party at SJP especially after opening the scoring in the third minute. Nothing complex about the goal either just some quick inter changes of passes, then a ball across the box which Lambert knocked back to Schneiderlin who then turned and put it past Elliott. The only good thing you could say about that fact was they had done it early enough for The Mags to recover and possibly get back into the game somehow. The goal certainly fired up both teams and supporters, with the game becoming one of the most open I have seen for quite a while. Shame there was some over fussy officiating by Chris Foy, while his assistants probably would have been better off watching from the stand for all the good their flag waving did to help him. One penalty claim looking a decent shout from where I was sitting. As for deciding offside well it boiled down to which way the wind blew as much as anything else. Bloody useless.... The equaliser when it came just past the half hour mark was quite simply all down to Gouffran. Breaking down the left he created chaos among the defensive ranks of The Saints and once inside the box they didn't dare touch him. That aside whether it was a pass to Cisse or a shot from the man himself it didn't really matter as the ball eventually found Sissoko who had the easy job of putting it in the back of the net. Unlike one or two others I could mention Gouffran delivers when in good positions. At one all the game became even more end to end. Southampton under new manager Mauricio Pochettino certainly play an attractive game and press everywhere across the pitch when the opposition are in possession. I can understand why they impressed Fergie at Old Trafford. With the half drawing to a close most of the crowd including myself were probably thinking going in even was fair enough, however no one told Papiss Cisse that. No idea who played the ball out of defence, not that it mattered much once Papiss had laid his boot on it from thirty five yards. An absolute screamer which Boruc never got anywhere near. Unfortunately Colo had to be subbed while the celebrations were going on with what looked like a back or hip injury. Not long after Foy brought the first half of a pulsating game to an end. Half-time entertainment consisted of a French Can Can........ Honestly you had to be there to see it as words for once almost fail me, f**king hilarious. As the second half started I was hoping The Toon may well try and contain The Saints for a bit with some possession football, Err! wrong... Tiote was running around like a madman with an orange and white ferret on his head (you have to see his new haircut). As I have said earlier this Southampton side are very good in possession and don't give the ball away much. Unlike Newcastle who at times race around after the ball in a desperate attempt to gain an advantage rather than being patient. This time it was Santon who with barely five minutes gone went walkabout and left a huge gap down our right side which the visitors exploited. Lallana doing the ground work and Lambert slotting it past Elliott. Not long after Lallana again had Santon in all sorts of trouble only this time Lambert fluffed the chance and it went wide much to everyone's relief. The game once again became very open with both sides really going for it. However things turned in The Toons favour when substitute Fox had a hand in affairs. Debuchy's attempted cross hitting the defender and Foy gave the penalty. Cabaye duly smacking the ball to the left hand side of the goal while Boruc went right. Having gone back into the lead with 23 minutes plus injury time to play I felt there were still more goals to come in this game. Fortunately for us the sixth of the game came in surprising fashion as that man Fox got in on the act again. Santon going on a great run down the left attacked into the box and played the ball across the face of goal. Fox attempt to clear failing miserably as he hit fellow defender Hooiveld with the ball and cannoned into the goal. The discussion between both players appearing very strained afterwards... So Les Lads achieved the aim of three points on an eventful afternoon with The French Brigade and Toon Army celebrating as one at the end. Positives... The gap at the bottom grows to six points, the Mackems are below us and Mbiwa looks class replacement for Colo. Negatives... Still giving cheap goals away, Colo joins Krul in treatment room and you only had until midnight on 24th to buy cheap shoes from Sports Direct. Next up an away visit to play The Swans.... WL

Good one WL - pretty much how I saw it - I thought Mr. T. had one of his better games along with Debouchy of course Sissoko and I am looking forward to seeing more of Mbiwa.
PS. CWL- Cisse must have been pretty much right in front of you when he struck that ball for his goal? ;D

Yeah I got a very good view of it..... and probably why I didn't recall where the ball came from originally other than from out of defence. Having seen it now from a number of angles it just becomes an even better goal. Elliott really put some meat behind that free kick and the jump from Jonas helped. I now also understand what the Cisse off side comments by Canny and Broon were all about. WL

WL Gouffran and Sissoko.....strength with guile?.........absolutely agree.....they both made multiple runs into space and never got the ball, as well as covering back.....Gouffran particularly an unsung hero........like the bit about him having an end product unlike other stepover artists. ...Kinda direct aint he?

Gouffran is becoming a favourite because of the way he plays not because of what he says..... once again unlike a few others. Best bit of wing wizardry in whole game for me was when Adam Lallana done Santon, not just once but three times in same piece of play. Certainly a lad I would buy off The Saints before Jason Puncheon. Apee must know about him from his days at Southampton and may even have given him his chance to play first team football while managing down there. Puncheon had his chance to come to The Toon once before and turned them down for Blackpool...... Not sure why we would go back for him again other than he is out of contract in the summer. One of those recurring rumours circulated by the media just before Toon happen to play the team he is at perhaps..... Expect they will have us in for Ashley Williams this week before we play Swansea.... WL

Cracking goal by Cissé. He was standing offside when Elliot hit the free-kick and since no one touched it in the duel between Jonas and Shaw it could be dicussed if he should have been called off or not. Not going to take that goal away from him though, he deserved it.
Nice to see to that the French players can cope with the league so early. Gouffran and Sissoko has been excellent so far. Expecting as much from Yanga-Mbiwa. He's been solid so far the little I've seen of him.

No concerns from me about Mapou. Like our other January buys this lad can also play although unlike Sissoko and Gouffran he will need to become familiar with the best ways of approaching defending in the Premier League. That said he oozes class and is able to bring the ball out from the back with far more confidence than many others I have seen. On one occasion yesterday the guy next to me simply said, "Bloody hell did you see that? That's our central defender and can go past players like they're not there! He'll do for me.". The fact he also came out six or seven minutes before the others at half time to warm up thoroughly again demonstrates the kind of professional he is. I'm satisfied to wait for him to secure a starting place, however should he perform as I hope then we may have another special player on our hands. WL
