For those outside of the football goldfish bowl which is the North East here is a piece of news which may not have reached you yet....
This is from the Mirror:
A Premier League footballer had his flash £75,000 motor seized by police after he was arrested on suspicion of motoring offences.
Newcastle United star Cheick Tiote, 26, was stopped in his Chevrolet Camaro close to the team’s Benton training HQ in the city.
The customised American ‘muscle car’ is familiar to the team’s fans as it is painted in the Toon colours of black and white - and has a personalised number plate.
Ivory Coast international Tiote, recently returned from the Africa Cup of Nations, was required to pull over before being questioned by cops.
Shortly afterwards, the car was seized and towed away to a police pound as a bemused Tiote looked on.
In a statement, Northumbria Police said: “At around 1.30pm on Tuesday, a car was stopped on Benton Park Road, Newcastle, and a 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of fraud in relation to driving offences.”
Their spokeswoman confirmed inquiries were on-going.
Tiote could face a fine, penalty points on his licence or even a driving ban if allegations against him are proven.
Valued at £20m by United, Tiote is a favourite with the Toon Army thanks to his tough tackling, but picked up 25 yellow cards from 50 league games in his first two seasons at the club.
He joined for £3.5 million from Dutch side FC Twente in 2010.
Had me going a bit when receiving texts this afternoon about Tiote being charged with fraud......thought it may have been because he was posing as a footballer. With those twenty five yellow cards there may be some truth in it!
