United confirmed on Tuesday morning that former Magpies player, coach & caretaker boss John Carver had returned to SJP, as assistant to manager Alan Pardew.
Carver has agreed a deal at SJP until the end of the season and was most recently in caretaker charge of Sheffield United, following the departure of Blades boss Gary Speed.
Appearing for Newcastle at junior and reserve team level, 46 year-old John (he celebrated his birthday last Sunday), then played in the Football League for Cardiff City and turned to coaching following a career-ending injury.
Making his name as a youth coach at SJP, John was promoted to assist Ruud Gullit and deputy Steve Clarke, remaining in post to serve under Sir Bobby Robson.
He took caretaker charge of one game (a 3-0 home win against Blackburn Rovers in September 2004), before the watching Graeme Souness officially succeeded Robson as manager and Carver was shown the door.
John's next port of call was Leeds United, where he served as first team coach and also had a short stint in caretaker charge at Elland Road. The installation of Dennis Wise and Gus Poyet spelt the end for him there in 2006 however, and he followed Kevin Blackwell to Luton Town.
In February 2008 John was appointed the head coach of MLS Canadian side Toronto but returned to the UK after resigning in April 2009.
December 2009 then saw him appointed as Paul Mariner's assistant down at Plymouth Argyle and he was soon back at SJP - albeit in the away dugout - as the Pilgrims played Newcastle in that season's FA Cup.
He then accepted an invitation from Gary Speed to join him at Bramall Lane in August 2010 and in recent weeks had been linked with a post at the Welsh FA.
