So for all of last season we played our hearts out to get into Europe but having got there we now play our second team (i.e. the kids) in the Europa League? Of course the rationale being we keep our first team fit for the Premier League which is our bread and butter. But then isn't it unfair on players like Arfa, BA, Cabaye, Colo et al to sit on the bench and sometimes not travel at all to European away games? I mean they got us there in the first place!
And then there is the problem of players not being fit and getting injured while playing all these extra matches. And besides the gates aren't very big for the European games (at least till now).
And all these extra games are costing us league points in the bargain! You only have to look at Stoke as the most recent example of a team who's league form suffered due to the Europa League last season.
So do we really want the Europa League? Why qualify when we play sub-standard teams in the competition? We clearly don't want to win it and if anything it is costing us league points and we might not qualify at all next season.
The matter is simple. The squad needs to get bigger if you qualify for Europe. We have a good squad but one that is only geared up to play well in one competition (Premier League) and maybe if we're lucky we go on a good cup run. So unless the owners show ambition, the whole purpose of qualifying and competing in Europe is lost.
Any thoughts on this guys....

Agreed, it is unfair on the guys who got us there last season all the more reason why the squad should have been strengthened both for that and maintaining the position in the league but its all about keeping the purse strings tight its mind boggling! Putting the spending aspect to one side, would those same players have been pleased to see a whole raft of new players come to the Club that may well have kept them out of the team anyway? I seriously doubt it.... We are not the only Club to keep our best players in reserve for the later rounds, just look at Liverpool! Yes it may not work, however I can understand why it's done. IMO having more players doesn't necessarily mean greater success. Their squad, like ours, just doesn't have enough quality in depth to approach it any other way. WL

Broon we will all have to wait until January at the earliest to find out... From what I have read in the local rag much of Newcastle's transfer dealings will depend on whether we sort out qualification to the last 32 this coming Thursday. Read into that what you will, however either way you have to be in it to win it! WL

WL We`re talking 2-3 players here, a centre half, a midfield play-maker and perhaps a winger who can cross the ball! I would hardly call that a raft! Anyway I dont think Pardew would know what to do with them anyways thats if Ashley gave the go-ahead which is very unlikely! ATB
