Just like last year, the goverment has started (despite an protest from the EU office) an organized hunt on the wolf tribes in this country. Last year the expected quota was 27 killed wolves, a number which the overeager hunters easily went over in just a few day, this year it is down to 20 wolves instead (you should note that over 6000 hunters signed up for this... 6000 hunters to kill 20 wolves). Half the quota was reached just over the weekend... two of the killed wolves were marked with GPSs for the help studying the species.
There is around 200 wolves in this country so it's not like it's overcrowded with them or something.
Last years excuse for the killing was to kill off the sick and weak wolves... almost all of them were strong and healthy. This year it was to reduce them so other tribes would be desperate enough to accept outsiders...
The hunters excuse for the killing is to protect their hunting dogs, to protect their children from getting attacked on the way to the school bus etc.
The real reason though is that they don't want the competition, they aren't allowed to shoot as many elks and deers with wolves, lynxes and other preadators around.
The war of the wolf here has gone on for years and years, one camp who wants it extinct and the other who wants it still alive.
No human in Sweden has been reported to be attacked by a wolf for over 200 years and that one had grown up with humans, and therefore "half-tame", and wasn't afraid of them like other wolves are.
Maybe I'm overreacting but I'm really saddened by this, I really am... upset even.

Should also add that more hunting dogs were killed by other hunters or ran over by cars than killed by wolves.

That is shocking Natt!!!!! But unfortunately, typical of hunters who think nothing of killing anything with 4 legs. Wolves are beautiful creatures, and should imagine that they are more afraid of humans than the other way round!!!! With good cause as well!!! Personally, I think it's hunting that should be banned, and only a very few licensed hunters allowed for the culling of animals, to either strengthen or preserve the species. There are times when some animals have to be culled, but it should be few and far between, and only EVER for the benefit of the species itself, and NEVER for sport!!!

Make you bloody sick, there are people in this country doing worse than any wolf ever could., why aren t they shot!!! If there is concern about sick animals, why not shoot em with a vaccine! Yet another reason that I am ashamed to be a human on this planet that we are destroying!!!! Very angry kitten now

I didnt even click on the video as I could imagine what it contained. Going slightly off topic now,. A few years ago, I took myself off to Tenerife in one of my not so wise moments....anyway, I visited a Zoo there which in lots of ways put my life into perspective.... I booked a Camel ride, but when I got to the enclosure, and saw the conditions these poor animals were in, I showed my disgust and shooed the man with the stick away......instead I beckoned one of the camels over to me, which it did and I talked to it, daft as it sounds, I stroked it and it put its head on my shoulder and appeared to fall asleep, calm as though never in its life it had experienced such kindness....I stayed there for over half an hour just whispering and stroking this poor animal, I was in tears....The man with the stick couldnt believe what he was seeing. It was truly heartwrenching. The second stop was at a very small cage containing a scar ridden underweight lion. There was a wall approx 4ft from the cage and I sat there watching him. Talking quietly to him, he lifted his head and looked me dead in the eyes, I swear I have never felt so humbled in my life that this magnificent animal was not only listening to me, but actually reacting to me.......All I could say was that I was so very very sorry that my species had done that to him.............all in all it was a terrible experience. Nothing more to say

Im really glad to hear that.
So many predators have already been wiped out by us leading to disasters along the food chain.
When you look at the proportion of prey consumed by them as opposed to what we kill its bloody ridiculous.

A little aside - 9 Swedish hunters were today on their way back home to Sweden having been beaten up by rioters in Tunisia.
