Sad news this morning regarding the death of former Newcastle United chief executive Freddie Fletcher who has died from cancer, aged 71. The Scot, born in Greenock, became a director of his hometown club, Morton, in the late 70s, before being appointed a director of Rangers through his business career. In 1992 he was named chief executive of Newcastle at a time when the club were at risk of relegation to Division Three (now League One). Kevin Keegan was soon appointed manager and, after the club narrowly avoided demotion that May, the club were transformed in the next few years, under the chairmanship of Sir John Hall. Though major trophies eluded United, Keegan led the club into the Premier League after winning the second tier and the team became one of the most attractive and glamorous in the country, aided by Fletcher's commercial acumen. Fletcher left the club in 2000 to pursue other business interests. CWL
