How does that work then? How has Liverpool winning in the FA Cup let us play in Europe next season? I thought we had to end up 4th or 5th to get into Europe.

There are a number of permutations still to become clear..........most involving Chelski and the Champions League but Barca may remove that from the equation. As far as yesterday was concerned the following is about as good an explanation as I could find...... Liverpool Win:This result would mean Liverpool playing either Chelsea or Spurs in the final and so long as both of those sides finish in the top six, then sixth place would be guaranteed a Europa League placing. Surely even Newcastle can’t manage to get out of the top six at this stage! Everton Win:If Everton then went on to win the final they would qualify for the Europa League and Newcastle would need to finish fifth to get into Europe. If Everton then went on to lose the final to a team who’d finished top four then Newcastle would still have to finish fifth, as Everton would qualify as losing finalists. However, if Everton get beat in the final by the team that finishes fifth (so doesn’t qualify for the Champions League) in the league….then the Cup winner would get the UEFA place and Newcastle would qualify if finishing sixth! As Everton lost in the semi I reckon four more points for definite in the league or three and an Everton loss and The Toon are in the Europa League competition for next season. Everton would be unable to match our points total with the number of games remaining. Should Newcastle even finish sixth that also could mean European football although much would depend upon Chelski as I have pointed out. Finish Fifth would obviously be better and should Fourth be achieved somehow they are in with a shout of the Champions League. If that lot is still too confusing then I suggest you just wait it out........unless someone else has a better idea of how it all could end. CWL
