According to a group of economists, we are taking too many Bank Holidays. Don't they realise we have the lowest number of Bank Holidays in Europe. Maybe I'm wrong, but aren't these and accountant the very people who advised the bank? what a magnificent job they did there.
I wonder if they advised the government on the advantages the Olympic Games would have for the North East?

We actually could do with more!! And have them a bit better spaced out. There is too big a gap from the May BH to August, and then from August to Xmas. And there are too many bunched up together in March/April/May! They were always something to look forward to when I was working, but typical that employers and bean counters want less of them!!

Britain may well have the lowest number of bank holidays in Europe but they are also the only country in Europe who compensate for Bank Holidays (Christmas) falling on a weekend by giving an extra day off.

Fairsy.....the firm I worked for only compensated us for the May Day Bank Holiday (in wages). Because we had month on, month off or, at one time, two months on, one off, the union had negotiated an "unsocial hours" payment into our wages so, I suppose that was the reason for it. The May Day must have come in after the negotiations.....a strange oddity!

What the point in having Bank Holidays when all the retail sector is open, supermarkets only close for two days a year.
There's no Bank Holidays in the summer, couldn't we have a couple then?
Gone are the days of cotton town holiday weeks in Lancashire when I was a boy. The towns would take in in turns to completely close down. This practice doesn't exist anymore, sadly neither to all the mills.
