Following the jailing of Liam Stacey for 56 days after his comments on Twitter about Fabrice Muamba’s cardiac arrest during the FA Cup quarter-final at White Hart Lane I was wondering whether people felt this was the correct action to take ? Ive been listening to and reading a number of articles and programmes about internet trolls and some of the stuff these people do truly is vile-in particular the trolling of sites set up in rememberance of dead children-Ive been quite shocked at how low people can go when afforded the anonymity of the keyboard even tho we did have some particularly repulsive characters on the old Chron boards too.Speaking for myself I do think its about time some people were made to face the consequences of their actions-especially when those actions are designed to hurt, intimidate or harrass others.

Massive difference between the two.................. Depending upon how an internet account is created you could search for years and never trace them. It takes up too much time, masses of people resources to investigate and possibly would still never yield a result. Those resources are currently used to find people involved with all sorts of other more pressing cyber crime from fraud to paedophiles and unlikely to be used to try and catch Trolls. No matter how offensive they may be they would still have to commit a crime in the eyes of the Law. The most likely way of finding out the real identity of a Troll is not by trawling the internet for them, but that they will brag about their exploits to others. It's then that someone will shop them! CWL

I think the best way of dealing with trolls is to ignore them! They only do it for the "shock" factor, so if everyone talks over them, instead of arguing and getting caught up in name calling etc, they'll soon lose interest when they don't achieve their desired results!! TBH I'd rather the money go on catching paedos than trolls. I do think though that 56 days is a rather long sentence, when you compare it with some who have done far worse things. That seems to be the trouble with the justice system though, no consistency, but that's another thread!!

As we have all experienced, troll can be a annoying the only way to deal with then is to (as have happened on this forum) moderate them out of existence.
I am aware this is not possible on all sites or circumstances on the web. The other alternative is to ignore them, but easier said than done when they post things that are offensive to normal people and usually of a person nature. However who cares what a troll says? Someone who lurks in the shadows, and hides in the cowardly world of anonymity, therefore has opinions that are neither worthwhile or merit discussion.

Maybe it should be a case of "Sticks & stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me". But, again, this applies to some cases or people but not to others....what hurts some people is "water off a duck's back" to others.
Sorry about all these "sayings"....if that's the right word!

Saw recent documentry about Trolls, it is in fact relatively easy to find out who they are. Though initially I would think that ignoring them would be the best idea, I also have to think that we should always challenge. I know that this feeds the Trolls, but should we really stand by and do nothing about them? We should challenge offensive postings but try not to get into anything that will satisfy their desire for attention. As for the Fabrice Muamba situation, I think that the sentence was justified, but then its difficult to weigh this up against other crimes that receive lesser sentences. We probably need to view each crime individually and not put it in comaparrison to other crimes. I guess this is what justice is about? Taking this crime as an individual situation, it was probably disproportinate to the crime, but needed to be seen to be taken seriously, otherwise anyone can say what they like on twitter with no comeback.

Mmm I'd be interested to know just how easy it is as well As I said, I had just watched the documentary about it that week, I cant remember what channel it was on, but they showed how easy it was to find out the posters.
